This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Yes, it is!
Sorry for the long delay, I had to go to a meeting.
It's definately very stout. I talked to him on the phone night before last to check on Truly and he said he's had a "shore-nuff" wild one in there since I was there. It was a very stout spotted saddle horse that had already busted down the gate of his round pen when he was trying to teach him to longe. He puts them in a regular work harness with a collar, britchin, trace chains, the whole 9 yards. The outside shaft is hinged and swings out so it's easy to get them in there. Then it's closed back and has a lynch pin to lock it in place. He sits on the little bench at the back. He said this horse took off like the devil was after him when he first started out, but settled down and worked very nicely after a very short period of time. He's supposed to show me how it works this evening when I go pick Truly and Ellie up. It was funny, he said the next thing he's adding is a seat belt. I can see why. If you get a horse going that fast in a 40ft circle, you could very easily get slung off.
Wow.... of course, take pictures if you get to see a demo!
I'd be most afraid they'd go down in it.
So it's not powered, it's moved by the horse, but he has brakes?
Hey, didja notice the guy on the horse with the tongue hanging out doesn't even HAVE stirrups. Cool!
They'd have a pretty hard time doing it. They're pretty much trussed up in there like a Christmas goose. Hopefully I can get pictures of a horse actually in it. I'll try to get video too.
It's not powered. It's just like having half a wagon hooked to a post and instead of them being out in front of the wheels, they're between them. They pull it around. The seat can be moved to the opposite end too, so the horse can be hitched in there to go around either way. The way it's set up now, you'd be going around counter clockwise.
Yeah - I'd be interested to see either pics or a movie!
I hadn't noticed that rider was completely without stirrups. Those guys are pretty good riders, eh?
Well, the horse shoer has come and gone... Cyn is trimmed, Bay has new pads.
Bay was a little 'off' this morning. Nothing anyone else can see but me, but the farrier found him stiff and he seemed down. It's pretty subtle but I can tell when he's got no zest, no zeal. I gave him 2 Bute. We've got a big weekend of riding hoped for, and I'm hoping a little bit of Bute might cure what ails him. Maybe he didn't sleep good. Tonight's ride will be very short down to the water and back, I'll have to see how he goes.
Now I'm off to make a sammich for my honey. He's running home during lunch to bring some quiet pony powder...
Yeah, especially given that they are doing the Airs Above Ground without stirrups.
I sure hope y'all have a good ride tonight and Bay does fine with his Bute. I guess we all need a little painkiller at times when we get older. I'll bet Cyn does fine with the water as long as Bay goes first. You're right about wider water being easier than narrow streams. There's not many horses that won't try to jump a ditch. Blade did it with me not too long ago. I thought he was gonna step across and all of a sudden he just bunched up and jumped like a rabbit. Talk about whiplash! I was lucky my "grab the mane" reflex was so quick or he'd've left me hanging in the air. I was totally unprepared.
ecurbh definately wasn't expecting it... and it happened so fast I wished I'd have known it was coming to get in front of him and kindof body block her. But he hung on! even though she had to scramble up the bank on the other side! Anyway.... we just need to go see if it's gonna be an issue or not.
As for Bay... he has days where he's great, and then days like this. I don't know what it is... I guess I have days too.
Especially when you've been tripping over household animals. ;o)
The pets are trying to kill me.... But I'm on to them. They're gonna have to try another tactic.
Kinda swamped here, it may be another half-hour or so till I can get away. I hope it's not too late for pony to have her "medicine".
Won't be to late. I was just out looking for you to come, worried that you were just delayed at the feed store. They say she should have it 2 hours before needed... so I was gonna give it at 2:30. We have plenty of hours of daylight tonight, if it would be politically better, maybe you should just stay and leave a little early. We can give it, dawdle around a bit, groom your horse, and maybe go then. Whatever works best. We don't have to rush this, if you are busy and want to just wait and go tomorrow, we can do that too.
That kinda reminds me of The Waltons and the Baldwin sister's "Recipe". ;o)
Those are great pictures - I'm envious.
If you ever get a chance to see them, I recommend it!
Oooooweeee girls, I cannot believe my good luck. I switched all of my business to a local vet since I moved so far away from my other vet. This new vet has about 4 guys working there and I had one come out today to check on my lame donkey. This guy looked like a greek god. I wanted to get a picture so I could post it but I was afraid he would think I was a freak for asking. I didn't want him to think I was putting the moves on him, either.
