The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread SIX

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Just tradition I guess. We couldn't afford rockets so we , believe it or not played with black cats as kids. Today I can buy the sky works but I still like to put packages of black cats under cans or in the yard and blow them up. I make the kids just watch though. Those things require experience:')

If I told you all that Sugar was 15.2 you would all splutter your cokes or starbucks ice-cream all over the keyboard!~ She might come in as "pony" size! LOL
I'll have deaconjim help me measure them. I am busy marking test papers for homeschool right now! : ) (Both kids have made 100% on everything so far! )

If you ever do really measure them, it's easier, because of the curve from the wither to the ground, to stand a pole straight up next to them, and use a stick that you can set on the wither and mark and measure where it crosses the stick.

Or.... do what everyone does, and just say your horse is 15.2. ;~D
That works too... ;-)

Forgive my ignorance, but what are black cats? For a second I thought that you meant real black cats, and I'm thinking "OK... Maybe on Halloween....Maybe they thought they were living dangerously or something..." :-p

I ask because I really don't want to splutter my ice cream anywhere... it's too good to waste. ;-)

You can check at your feed store too. They make a tape that has hand measurements on it on one side, and on the other you can get an estimate of a horses weight. I don't think they would cost much, they are just made out of paper.

We were talking about that very thing last night. If there was only one holiday a year to celebrate it seems most boys, (the ones I've known anyways, brother, husband, son, SIL, grandson) would choose the 4th

See, that's another reason I shouldn't have kids... they'd absolutely resent me on the 4th. ;~D

Hi y'all! I'm catching up on the thread here after a nice long weekend off...

Becky... your new place looks wonderful. I'm glad you had a Wal-Mart to help you out with the flat. That's aggravating about the trailer lights but it sounds like everybody did great and that they like their new home just fine.

Squarebarb...Glad you had a good trip and your pics were really nice. Thanks for posting them!

Sharn...I know how you feel about selling Lightening, Misty, Thunder and Adge. It's hard sometimes, but you did a good thing by getting them the best home you could with people who will love them and where they can realize their potential.

Beaker...Glad you had a good trip too and am really looking forward to your pictures of Boston on the 4th. I'll bet it was a blast!

It sounds like everybody had a great 4th, whether at home or out on the town. I had a good weekend too. Didn't do much, but that's nice in itself. I had a good ride on Saturday but forgot the camera again. Sorry 'bout that. I promise to do better next time, honest! Sunday we had a nice relaxing day at my in-law's pool, grilling out and just laying around. It was just too hot to do much of anything else. Yesterday we grilled steaks at my Mom's house for lunch and then went to my Husband's brother's house to watch fireworks with them and their grandkids. A very nice weekend indeed.

Since I don't have any horse pictures to share, I thought I'd share this one of a critter I passed in the road on my way to work this morning....

It was raining and there were several of them out in the road where it passes through a swampy area. They are HUGE! I wish I had put something down beside him to give you some scale. He was at least as long as my hand from the wrist to the tip of my middle finger. He's what we call a "Crawdad", but he's so big you'd think he was a small lobster. I stopped the car to take his picture and when he saw me this is what he did. It's like he's saying "Bring it, Baby! I'll make you sorry you were ever hatched!" LOL! He wouldn't let me sneak around behind him either, he just kept turning and threatening me with his claws. So funny!

We use to catch those things all the time when we were kids. It's funny, I don't see them at all in the creek here, but there were lots in the creek in town where I lived as a kid. We use to catch horny toads too, and I never see them around here either.

Sorry 'bout that! I knew better, I'm still on weekend mode I guess. Too many posts to read in one sitting and keep them all straight. You had the cool pics of the mud hole. Those were weird. It looked like a living thing! And the snake in your garden was really scary. I'm sure glad it didn't bite you!
