*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yes, it is. When you buy them, you have to say you are not going to shoot them off in Ohio.
This is going on my list of "Things That Make You Go "Wow"." How many people actually follow that? What is your sales tax?

The sales tax just went down to 5% on July 1st. Cigarette taxes went up 70 cents a pack! Our Governor (Taft) is on the bottom of the list, when it comes to approval rating. My County raised the percent on local taxes, so we will be paying the same rate.

We had a nice evening too with the kids. Lots of food, the weather was near perfect.

Some holidays are so much fun when there are kids around aren't they? 4th of July and Christmas are the biggies.

Um, Here is where I show my ignorance. How do I measure Smokeys height in hands?

Yeah:)

We were talking about that very thing last night. If there was only one holiday a year to celebrate it seems most boys, (the ones I've known anyways, brother, husband, son, SIL, grandson) would choose the 4th and girls Christmas.

My son last night said something funny. Said what;s not to like about the 4th. It involves 2 things men love doing, alcohol and explosives:)

A hand is 4 inches. Horses are measured from the ground to the top of their whithers. TAke a measuring tape, find how many inches and divide by 4.

I thought she looked really tired too. That's her feed bucket by the way. She shook it off and was all pepped up the next morning. We might be seeing some left over anesthesia effects from the half vet too.

No worries!

Measure Smokey's height in inches from the ground to his withers. That's the bump on his back just behind where his neck ends. Since each "hand" is equal to four inches, divide the number of inches by four and you have your number of hands. The remaining inches are measured as .1 .2 or .3 So if you have a horse that is 63 inches tall, you have a horse that is 15.3 hands.(said as fifteen three) A horse that is 56 inches tall is 14 hands. 58 inches, 14.2 hands, is the cut off between a horse and a pony.

(schpeal off) :-)

It's an interesting relationship those two have developed. It's almost like she's the leader but she's really not. She will not follow him and does her own thing but he follows her everywhere . She's always aware of him though and will give him his space and backs off when he gets "to herding" esp if she's at the water. I wish I had had time to take a picture when he was laying down. She was standing, almost guardlike and he was laying there like, I don't know..like that's where he put her. Make any sense?

Thanks. Big difference. I wish I was there right now instead of sitting here eating my half lunch.

I like shooting them off too but I was so tired last night. I just raised my bedroom window and enjoyed the show. Usually we go out to the island for a display and then come back home and play with the ones we bought.

Thur the vet came out and did one side and quit because she "went wild" I have another vet coming out to finish up and check that tooth this week.

That's what happened here last night. It wasn't ~all~ that bad, untill about 11:00, I guess when everyone got back from the town displays. Ugh. Right when we were trying to sleep.

I just woke up. pathetic, huh? Two half-sleepless nights will do that to a gal.

Oh I remember that now. Any vet that tried to pull that with me would be out the door so fast that he wouldn't know what boot kicked him in the butt on the way out. ;-) When did you try to get her teeth done? I hope that this new vet works out a lot better for you. Are you keeping your farrier now that you have a new place? (Which looks gorgeous by the way.)

Take a measuring tape, find how many inches and divide by 4.

Or.... do what everyone does, and just say your horse is 15.2. ;~D

Everyone I've ever met, and most ads I read for horses, think their horse is 15.2, and many are a lot shorter than Bay, who actually ~is~ 15.2. ;~D

"15.2" is what everyone thinks is "average" ;~D

He was the only one in town. My ferrier went up 5 dollars because of "gas prices" so I can't afford to send him to the horses:') Seriously, I have another one coming out that is local and highly recommended. He's supposed to be there today. I think I fixed Sarah Lees feet but I want him to check and she needs a trim anyways.
