*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'm thinking about Misty, Lightning, Adge and Thunder and hoping they fared as well. They are all used to farm machinery nearby and we have an air force base about 50 miles away so get some pretty hefty picture moving sonic booms.............so they are used to very loud noises and vibrations. Deaconjim hasn't spoken to Mark yet. BTW Mark is keeping their names the same! : D

Here it was constant racket from dark till midnight. The horses were OK in. Homer was just out of sorts whining and shadowing us, even stoned. But the biggest stuff was right before midnight, when I was really tired of it and trying to sleep. Their little finale. The last popping and whistling combo thing went on a good couple of minutes without stopping. If anything is gonna wig the horses out, it's those repeating ones that don't stop.

Yeah those are the ones that got to my horses, even the little ones we had here.

I love the night fireworks. I always have. AT the big fireworks shows in town they always end with about a 5 minute finale. One right after another sometimes more then one at a time. I always hate to see them end.

I realized that you didn't celebrate the 4th in England:). One, I'm not sure how long you've lived here, and two, DJ isn't from England right? I wondered if he did the fireworks thing?

I've always liked the shows, but I've always been afraid of personal ones. I was always afraid of the little zippy buzzy things that hop around on the ground ;~D thought they were gonna jump on me ;~D

I did get hit with a bottle rocket at a rock concert once, in the leg. Guy fired it right behind me.

I guess we have been extremely lucky that we have never had a bad injury.

Last night the Mack Charlie and Travis were all talking about things they did with firworks as kids. Roman candle, and bottle rocket wars, blowing the powder out of crackers till you had a big pile and lighting it...

I remember one 4th, the kids were probalby about 16 and 13, we went to a friends for the day. There were probably about 30 people, 10-12 families all with huge bags of fireworks. When night came they all got in these peoples arena, and starting shooting stuff off at the same time. I was sitting out of the arena watching....:) looked like a battlefield.

I have been here 4 years and LOVE it. You have so much more freedom in everything than there is in Britain. Freedom of speach should not be underrated!
Deaconjim is a redneck Georgia boy through and through! LOL His family got together on the 4th July but fireworks have been banned in GA until this year, and only the sparkler ones are allowed now. I like to watch fireworks but am scared ever since I was at a show which went very very wrong. The rockets were taped to sticks and the sticks came out of the ground and everything went into the audience. Serious injuries and not a pretty sight, a woman two people away from me had a sharpened ended stick impaled in her back. Not good.

I guess that would put you off fireworks.

Good for you:) We had a nice rain yesterday morning, everything greened back up. Rather cloudy and overcast now too.

They're illegal here, but that's really no big surprise. The only places where they are legal are public displays, but people get their hands on them anyway.

Fireworks are illegal to shoot off in Ohio. My family used to go South every year to visit relatives, and my Dad would stock up on fireworks. Now you can buy them here. Can't miss out on that sales tax, you know.

Good morning, had a great Fourth here :)

A family barbeque with a couple of neighbors who are almost family, an afternoon playing penny ante poker with the kids, watched Independence Day again (that should be required on the 4th I think), sat on the front lawn and watched the fireworks display from Virginia City. I spent about $20 at the dollar store buying the light sticks that make bracelets, glasses, etc. and the kids and adults had a ball after dark with those. I took some pictures and will try to see if I can post them tonight.

You can buy them in ohio but you can't shoot them off? That's odd...

I had a great fourth too. Visited my uncle and my aunt, had a nice BBQ and had Starbucks ice cream that was to die for. It was a combination of coffee and chocolate, but I forget the name.

I've only heard a sonic boom once or twice in my life and it's always scared me. I don't know how you get used to it.

That's odd...

Yes, it is. When you buy them, you have to say you are not going to shoot them off in Ohio. Those sparklers and little ones are ok, just not the bigger kind. It's all about the sales tax.
