*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I had another visitor in my garden, and didn't know it till I stepped on it barefoot

Luckily the damn thing didn't bite me. I was getting ready to put the sprinkler on and felt something funny under my foot and looked down. LOL, I sure screamed funny. I got the hoe and held it down till Mack came and got the limb loppers and lopped off his head.

Getting a bit unnerving. We had one of these in the driveway last year. In 24 years we've found 3 rattlesnakes on our property, 2 in the last 2 years, both about the same size. Do these things nest in an area and stay there. This one had 2 rattle segments on his tail, so I don't think he was very old. EEWWWWW, scared me:), no more barefoot for me.

This damn thing never moved at all. I stepped on him, held him down with a hoe and Mack got hold of it's head with the loppers and it didn't fight at all....That seems strange to me.

We only have little garter snakes.

No venomous snakes, no venomous bugs :~D

I marvel at folk that live where there are who dare go in the woods! There are a few small rattlers in the desert parts of Eastern WA.... half the size of those commonly seen in AZ... and smaller than that one.

But not on this side of the mountains. too cool? too wet?

It's been years (up till last year), that we have had snakes in the yard. I'm always running around barefoot. The one we found last year, I figured was a fluck and didn't think twice about it, now I'm beginning to wonder how many are out there:). i will be wearing shoes from now on.

Snakes don't bother me to bad. This one just scared me because I did step on it. One other time one scared me because it was in the house. I found it under a sack of trash that has sat on the floor for a day. Finding them out in the woods doesn't bother me. I leave them alone, give them plenty of space and go on about my business. But I don't like to find them that close t the house. Especially a rattlesnake, JP and Blake play out there....EEWWWWWWW.

~shudder~... Make sure they know to stay away if they see one.... and report to you if they ever get bit.

As kids visiting in AZ we were told semi-casually how to avoid snakes, I guess. Kids play outside there too :~D

I had a wonderful time in Boston, and I just got back this moment. I went with two other people, and one of them was sight seeing. She's never been to Boston, and she's orignially from Honduras. We went all over the place, and long story short, I have some really wonderful pics of the John Hancock tower, the boston gardens and the common, some pics of some really nice architecture because boston is a really old city, and and pics of Harvard as well.

It was Game Day, the Sox were playing the Toronto Bluejays, so everyone and their uncle and their dog, and their uncles uncles uncles dog once removed was in the city. Using the subway was literally like being sardines in a can. But we ended up going to fenway, I have some pics of that, and we ended up going to a sports bar right across the street and having some lunch and drinks while watching the game, which was really nice.

I have one, but it's an internal card reader, and I'm trying to figure out what bay it would go into in my computer, I think right below the floppy disk drive if it's possible, but I have no idea how to hardwire it in. It might be easier for me to either look for the darn cable a little bit harder, or buy a new one. :-)

I haven't run into that arrogant woman, but I certainly am going to use that "bless your heart" comment if I get the chance. Being from the North, I'm pretty sure that she doesn't know that it can be a very nice snub disguised and a compliment. I love it.
I wonder if I'm going to see her for a while, considering her precious, 40,000 dollar horse (which she made DAMN sure that I knew) is shipped (with shipping wraps) to Virginia to go to the trainer's for the ump-teenth time. If I don't see her, it's no skin off my nose!
Tell me, if you were shipping your horse to Virginia from Mass, which is quite a haul, would you only wrap his front legs? And that's how she sent him! With shipping wraps on his front legs, and that's it. If I had sent him, I would have wrapped (all) of his legs, put fleece on his halter, so that it didn't rub him, and bubble wrap the rest of him. ;-)

I want to move to Washington!
BTW Becky, the one that I saw was a timber rattler. We also have water moccasins, cottonmouths, copperheads, coral snakes, diamond back rattlers, and lots of non poisonous ones. I have seen a very thick, very large, 6ft plus, rattlesnake. : (
What with black widow spiders, and all those snakes, fire ants in the yard, so hot you cant breathe............do you blame me for wanting to move to Washington Hair? :)

UUHHHHHHH, that was a big one.

I've been outside taking pictures of the fireworks going off up the road. These people have cannons I think. Really big stuff.

Those are small mortars with spherical shells - probably 2 or 1 1/2 inch. You can tell they're small because the "break" (the pattern made by the stars as they are propelled out of the shell) is not symmetrical. To get a symmetrical pattern, you really have to go up to at least a 3 inch spherical or 4 inch cylindrical shell.

You can buy them already made up and loaded in a cardboard mortar in the fireworks outlets by the side of the road. We used to make our own back in the day.
