This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I think of them as thin sweats.... you've seen these... cotton stretch stirrup pants.
For me, there the next best thing to having real breeches.
They are loose and just something I picked up at Wal-Mart. I prefer black because they don't show dirt and slobber. I tried Jodpurs early on and they were ok but more expensive and you had to wear high top boots with them or they looked funny. So since I'm not into showing or anything, I just went back to my cheapo $8 Wal-Mart jersey knit pants. If I tear them up I just throw them out and buy some new ones.
Beaker, I think your best strategy for dealing with this woman is to just ignore her. She obviously gets her kicks out of being nasty to people and getting a rise out of them. The more you react to her nastiness, the bigger charge she gets out of it. She must really be an insecure person in her riding ability and herself as a person to behave this way for no reason. I'd avoid her if I could and say as little as possible when I couldn't. The old Southern Belle saying when someone is being catty is "Well how nice", and turn your back on her and go on about what you were doing like she didn't exist anymore. Maybe that'll frost her enough to make her leave you alone.
I love the Southern Belle cheek... My favorite is "Bless your heart..."
OH MY! Look at those ears - particularly the last one.
Very cute... is mom handleable then, just not too sure how well she'll tolerate trimming?
tapping my fingers. I'm ready to go:')
uh oh - and he's not, I take it?
Have a good, safe trip.... slow and easy on everything, remember your passengers back there trying to stay on their feet ;~D
Oh how precious. I want one of those too lol.
She tolerated me pretty well when I had feed in the bucket. I tried to put a string halter on her at first, but she would have none of it and was going to take the baby elsewhere so I backed off...for now. When the feed was gone she walked off, but I just followed. She'd come back to me every now and then to see if the bucket had magically refilled but stepped away when she saw that it hadn't. I just kept standing there and inching my way closer to the baby and he kept circling his mama but finally came on over and let me scratch him. I'll get to play with him lots more this weekend.
Trimming Miss Jenny will have to wait until I can win her confidence enough to get a halter on her. She finally let me scratch her shoulders some before I left, so we're getting there.
Don't get me started:') I just talked to the vet. HMM. Sarah Lee only got half floated and he didn't get to that tooth. He told me the pawing was free. Evidently his ankle a little swollen today. I asked about sedation and the receptionist told me he did but she "went wild" Sometimes that stuff works right the opposite in humans. I wonder about horses. Anyway, I guess he's got her in a good mood for me this morning, huh? Oh well they finally got their rabies and west nile. Funny, Okie hadn't had his done before and does fine. Darn She horse.
Well, if no one's worked with her in a while, she might just resist being caught.... you can't touch my pony either when she's in most moods.... unless you have a bucket ;~D
As long as she was halter broke at some point, that is ;~D
HUH? Are you saying your vet sedated her and didn't get her teeth finished? Because she had a bad reaction to the sedative?
No, I'm saying he half did it and she pawed him and he said she was too dangerous to continue. She has not liked him since the first time she saw him.
Huh. Well, we haven't been too impressed with him either. So now what? find a new vet at the new place?
What I meant by the sedative is that sometimes they don't work with humans and occ they get even more hyper. Just wondering if she has an adverse reaction or being a brat.
Yeah, one where I can be there. I do lots of things to here and she's never gone crazy. She doesn't like her mouth messed with though but pawng?????? Not for me. Just some head bobbing.
I don't know, but they have a choice in sedatives. If she did have an adverse reaction, it would behoove you to find that out for sure, and write down the drug used, so you can tell a new vet which one to NOT use.
Any horse can be sedated into enough of a stupor to do her teeth. That he quit with her half done is ridiculous. More likely, he just didn't give her enough. That happens all the time, they give an amount, the horse still fights, they give a little more. I don't understand not finishing. Getting her tranquilized enough to float her teeth is a medical problem, not a behavioral one.
Many horses will fight like hell having their teeth floated. I'd guess most are sedated for the vet to be able to do any kind of complete job. You just won't get good, still, cooperation without it, well enough to really feel and find all the rough spots. You should have hung around to watch. The thing that most perplexes me about your vet is that he does everything when you aren't there. I'd never do that. That's when you learn, is being there and holding the horse. You're always getting these reports second hand.
