You bet. Tues. nights are a barrel race I want to go too. And last week when I rode with Celia and Sally they are planning to go to Arrowhead state part Tues or Thurs to ride. I'd like to go with them. If it's Tues. I may take Rock so Harley isn't too tired. If it wasn't so hot I woudn't worry about it. But in this heat and humidity, that might be a bit much to ask of him to trail ride all day then barrel race that night.
I also want to start hauling Harley to different arenas to get him use to the idea that no matter what arena he is at he is going to be doing the same thing.
Becky
Sounds good.... looks like it will be up to you and the others to take lots of pictures for us to talk about this week.... we aren't going anywhere :~D
We may go to the rodeo tonight. We thought about it last night, but we were both tired. Mack worked all day, and I had JP all day. We're so old:) We were both just very content to sit here and vegetate. Especially since I heard there wasn't that many barrel racers entered. They're about to price themselves out of business.$40 to enter. You can go to the local jackpots and pay 20 and have as much a chance to win about the same amount.
Becky
Since there isn't much talk going on, I'm going to run something by you. Do you know what a 4D Jackpot is?
Becky
No - I've heard you talk of jackpots, but I don't know how they work. Wanna tell me? :~D
Yeah,:), There are some complaints in this area about the 4D, if they are fair or not. They can be 3D, or 5D, it depends on the how many people show up.
Anyway, The old way of running a jackpot was, they had classes. Novice horse, $100 horse, $500 horse, Open.
If your horse had won no money you ran Novice, $100 dollar horse class was horses who had won under $100, $500 under 5, open was any horse who had won over $500. The problem with this method was alot of people 1. lied about the amount of money their horse had won so open horses were running in lower divisions, 2. you get a very experienced rider even on a green horse they could run times as fast as an open horses, 3. green riders on an open horses were not as good as the horse could be.
3-4-5 D's are: everyone runs in one group. There are no divisions by the amount of money your horse has won.
To keep this simple I'm rounding off times. Say the fastest time in a 4D is 17.00, depending on how many people are there determines how many places they pay per division. (the D stands for divison.) 17.00 wins 1st in the 1st division. they pay 3 places. 17.1 wins 2nd, 17.2 wins 3rd. THEN they add a 1 second to the winning time. Which makes the 2nd division winner the closest one to 18.00 without going under. They pay 3 places, add a 1 second to 18:00 and so on.
The thing that alot of runners complain about is if they run 17:5 they do not win, where as an 18:00 would.
Is this clear as mud. IMO, the 3-4-5 D's are more fair. What do you think?
Becky
I guess I should add, if its a 3D day they add a second 2 times to the winning time, if it's a 4D 3 times...understand:)
Also, sometimes, they only add a 1/2 second instead of a whole to start each division.
Becky
I think I understand, and I think I understand why people say it's not fair... Tell me if I'm right.
Horse A - 17.0 Sec - 1D 1st place Winner
Horse B - 17.1 Sec - 1D 2nd place Winner
Horse C - 17.2 Sec - 1D 3st place Winner
Horse D - 17.4 Sec wins nothing
Horse E - 17.5 Sec wins nothing
Horse F - 18.0 Sec - 2D 1st place Winner
Horse G - 18.1 Sec - 2D 2nd place Winner
Horse H - 18.4 Sec - 2D 3rd place Winner
Am I right?
You got it.
The thing the people who don't win are not thinking about IMO, is they wouldn't have won the old way either. Right?? This makes it more fair because slower times do have a chance to win. Where as the old way, I saw $100 horses run as fast as open horses, so you had to have those faster times to be competitive. The "D" jackpots, give people who have green horses a chance to compete and win. Right?
Becky
They wouldn't have won the old way IF they were playing fair, that is:)
Becky
Right... it's sortof like handicapping in golf, which is unfair also, but encourages entry into competition because more people can win...
Life's not fair I guess. ;~D I can't think of a more fraud-proof way to seperate them in a sport where the horse's record doesn't come into the arena with his history attached to him.
I'm also thinking, a problem with the "D" races are someone could actually win last plase in one division and 1st in the next. I think, that I'm not sure of, but I can see where it is a possibility.
Becky
Hmmm.... I suppose they could. So you really just run the race best you can, and whether you win or not, is sortof a lottery :~D
I just have trouble seeing the whole picture:)
I think it's a very fair way, but maybe that's becasue I'm a beginner:), and this gives me more a chance of winning a payback. But you know, Kristy fell in a "crack" Thurs at a race she went too, and we were just glad she was at least in a crack...
Becky
Well, you need to know the times your horse is running consistently. You'd know if you had a chance, which IMO, makes the odds better then a lottery. Around here you need to be running not more then in the 20's, for 3D's 19's. If your more then that, you should pretty much know your out.
But I've heard people say, "I've got to slow my horse down, or I'll fall in a crack" Well, that's stupid to me. Why not speed him up, which is what you should always be doing.
Becky
How close are you to consistent, from one run to the next? within a second or a couple seconds or parts of seconds? I don't know how you'd ever know if, in the third turn, you needed to add or subtract a half a second to try to play it that way.
That is interesting.
English riding, equivalent to barrels:)
Becky
It is a little rougher, a little more of a spectator sport, like barrels.
Do they ever run barrels head to head? ;~D
Timers are set to three places past the point. i.e. 17.232. It can get very tight.
