*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

LOL with the visual picture of the cab of the bobcat filled with dirt. I'm glad you didn't get hurt.

Closest fire right now is about 20 miles away and I think pretty much under control. Haven't heard any news today so I don't know what the percentage is, or whether or not we have any new ones. Biggest discomfort is the smoke.

You see the smoke now?

Oh dear, that would scare me to death. Prayers for an end to the fires. I imagine there's a lot of fuel, with that rainy spring you've had. Have you had fires come down close before? What do you do?

Heh. Sorry about the double post, I got a little click happy with the post button when things wouldn't post right away.
You should give trotting ground poles a shot after your comfortable with them at a walk. Distances for trotting ground poles should be between 4 to 4.5 feet apart for a 14.2 hand horse, and about 4 and three quarters feet apart for a horse. You can adjust it as you get used to your horse's trotting stride. Make sure that you squeeze with your legs to encourage him to pick up his feet and not nick the poles. You should do it at the walk too.

Yes, we can see the smoke - you can just about see forever here so unless the fire is hidden by mountains, you can see the fire also. Right now, the fire isn't visible but going home yesterday, I could see it running along the ridge.

I hate fire, it terrifies me. When I lived in NC, I had a fire come through, burned across two counties and ended up burning on all four sides of my property (eight acres) although I had two sides with road frontage so the fires on those two sides were the road width away. We were alerted to the probability of evacuating so at that time I hooked up the trailer and put my dog and cat in crates in the back of the pick-up, along with important papers and paintings. I put my son in the cab and when the order came through, I loaded my two fillies and drove out with fire on both sides of the road. The fire department was all volunteer there - everyone with a tractor was plowing firebreaks, the rest of the men in the neighborhood were manning hoses and shovels - my ex-husband included.

Last year's Waterfall Fire came within a block and a half of my son's house. DIL and I evacuated all the animals to the vet hospital, my son manned a termporary animal shelter in a school for three days, plus running out with the animal control van to rescue dogs, cats, chickens, goats, etc. from houses in the path of the fire. At one point they were called out to rescue a pet mountain lion but passed on that when they got there. Owner had already left and lion was not friendly. They made sure it could get out of it's cage and left.

I smoke but I'm liable to run down and yell at anyone I see throw a cigarette out the window of a vehicle (tourists favorite pastime I think).

Heh.... I'll admit to not ever measuring, I just put them about '~that~ far apart' It may surprise me if I set them up on Friday and they are that far apart, but I'm no good on estimating distances in my head. ;~D

I'm keeping an eye on Cyn today, she sure is lying down alot. She normally does lay down and nap some during the day, she's the nappinest horse I know, but not ~all~ day. I'd guess she's layed down four or five times in different places and times today, not rolling, just resting. If I leave her alone she stays down 30 minutes or so. Every time I go out there she pops up and seems normal.... trotting around, nibbling hay, bossing the pony around, and resenting too much attention, like she always does.

Think she's just tired or is it the grey doom of the day outside? Mild malaise of some kind?

Scary. Fires, other than dwelling fires and small fires that people set, just never happen on a grand scale this side of the mountains. They do in other parts, Eastern WA, where it is drier and there are pine forests.

I'll pray for an end to these lightening storms you're getting... and an end to these fires. I assume you are in a fire district that would come in to give your area special attention if there were fires headed your way? Aren't you in a reasonably developed area?

Could be that she's tired and it's the grey of the day. If she's being her Cyn self aside from the napping, I wouldn't worry. You guys have been trail riding more than ususal.

I'm lucky I still get to drive it:) I was also lucky it wasnt' a load of rock. I had been hauling rock all day that day. God protectes the ingnorant. I'm very careful now, I'm not ignorant anymore.

I caught this post right before I went out to ride Rusty. I'm gathering I should start trotting the poles with them on the ground?? I'm glad I did catch it too. I left them spread apart but took them out of the blocks and tried trotting him a bit over them. He did OK. He didn't freak or slam on the brakes at least.

Great. He'll be easy then.

Just play with the spacing next time so they are about as far apart as his stride. It doesn't have to be complicated.

Just make sure those "cavaletti" can be knocked down without a lot of trauma. I know I'm sticking my nose in, but it just doesn't look safe to me.

I would put the concrete blocks on their sides and place the poles on top. When your horse starts cavaletti, he's going to be hitting them pretty hard. Don't want him to get hurt.

BTW, building proper cavaletti is a cinch. Here are the plans on line: Building Your Own Cavaletti . The advantages are: they are safe, they are adjustable to 3 different heights, they are stackable for free jumping or grids.

I built five of them for my trainer. Building them took one afternoon, painting them another. Cinch! (I'm no carpenter.)

I think she's going to keep the pony (her name is Pocahontas). Probably just as a pet, since I think she's a little hot for somebody with a dicey leg.

For somebody like me who's used to big long-legged 16 hand hunters (or in the case of my new Cadillac ride, 16.3 hand hunters!), it sure is weird to be perched on top of this little 13 hand Arab. I feel like I'm riding a pedal car . . .
