This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

The new duramax is a nice truck. Had it a week and not gotten a chance to drive it yet though. : )
LOL, that is why it's best to have cattle on many acres of pasture!

The first cattle I owned were Angus but have since had several breeds. With my Angus there was some calving troubles and I lost several cows and calves. Finally settled with Charolais and have been pleased with the results.

Well if bad feelings occur with my neighbor (my Brother-In-Law) we have problems!

How much land do they require to graze? We were thinking about a couple. Do they have to be grain fed for meat?

We call it compound wire around here. Some houses have it. Me, I want a block fence. One of those that you bust beer bottles in with the concrete at the top before it hardens.
I think it was a minimum of three acres for each cow-calf pair. From experience I would say more acres is better. Not sure about feeding one grain for slaughter as I sell mine at weaning time, 6 months of age. I get my beef at the butcher shop, no way I could slaughter one I raise......... : )

Oh, ok. I don't think I could get attatched to a cow though. I was hoping I could sell a few a year to pay taxes. That's what the owner of my stable does. That's still a lot of land. Maybe that's why she feeds her, ah...she cows feed.
So what do you do with you male cows, if you don't sell them for meat?
Thanks! They are a large breed of cattle and were originally used as draft animals in France.
