*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Not to be a commercial or anything, but...

The source of poison plants' irritation is in a poisonous oil called urushiol (oo-roo-she-all). If not removed by a product like Tecnu, urushiol "locks on" to skin cells within 20 minutes after exposure and can cause a red, itchy rash within 12 to 72 hours. Three of four people react to urushiol, picking it up directly from the culprit plant or second-hand through contaminated clothes, equipment or pets.

To address the other sources of contamination, Tecnu is formulated for use on clothing, shoes, gloves, tool handles, pets and human skin. If used within two to eight hours from exposure, Tecnu removes urushiol before the rash begins. Of course, it's not always clear that exposure has occurred until a rash has already started. If that's the case, washing with Tecnu helps remove any oils on the skin, and allows the skin's natural healing process to begin without recontamination.

That kind of reminded me. I've encountered something new this last week. I wonder if you all have heard of it or is it just some new fad.

If you feel up plastic baggies with water and hang them in front of doors and windows flies will not come inside your house. Something about the way they see it scares them away????? Kristy told me this just a week or so ago, and now I'm hearing about it everywhere, and they had them hanging all over the place at the clinic. I noticed it mostly in the snack bar there, and you know I didn't notice that many flies around while we ate there. You all ever hear about this? I was wondering how it would work hanging them along the front of stalls?

Huh, I've never heard of that. Worth a try, baggies are dirt cheap.

Speaking of new things, I bought a Hoover Floor Mate and I just love it. It's for hard floors and has one setting for vacuuming dry but then it has a tank for water and cleaner so when you're done vacuuming, you switch to mopping and that son of a gun cleans hard floors like you wouldn't believe. It has scrubbing things that whirl and it gets in all the cracks and crannies in the floor. First time I used it, when I was finished, the take up tank was sludge.

Welcome back! I am so glad that you had a great time, and learned a lot. I saw Martha at the QH Congress. She sets up a booth, with the barrel racing merchandise for sale. My daughter would love to attend one of her clinics. She is really getting into this barrel racing.

There sure where some major happenings going on these past days.

Hair had a flat tire, scoping out new trails.

Frog sold Blade.

I wrecked my tractor, and got hit on the head with a dead tree limb.

Exciting huh?

Well then you really should try to send her to one of these. By Sunday afternoon, I was on information overload. Check out her web site. Maybe you can find one closer to home, altho, if you could make it there it would be worth the trip. I didn't realize they did them so long ago, but Martha and RE have been putting these clinics on for 35 years. I think they said this one was their 156th one.

58 degrees right now and partly cloudy, with rain and cooling expected the next several days.

It doesn't feel like summer, but I never complain about any rain in June July or August. ;~D

A little off horse topic, but I got to tell you what happened to me last night shooting. My shotgun had been giving me some grief not going off, when I pulled the trigger. I would have to unmount the gun, open it, close and then shoot again. It did that to me, and when I lowered it, it went off! Scared the heck out of me. It dropped out of my hands and hit the concrete. Messed up the forearm and stock pretty good. I was so upset, I was bawling. :(

They told me, I could sit out the rest of the round, but just like when you get thrown from a horse, you better get back on. One of the guys adjusted the trigger, and I shot it again, with no trouble. Next week, I am going to the Ohio State shoot, and have it checked out.
