Word For The Day, Thursday, May 26, 2005
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
[artifice \AR-tuh-fis\, noun: 1. Cleverness or skill; ingenuity; inventiveness. 2. An ingenious or artful device or expedient. 3. An artful trick or stratagem. 4. Trickery; craftiness; insincere or deceptive behavior.]
[Built by design and artifice, it fell apart in confusion and chaos. --John Gray, [1]False Dawn
This theatricality is necessary to signal Prospero's farewell to magic, and indeed the play debates that very contrast between artifice and reality, illusion and truth. --Amy Rosenthal, "An insubstantial pageant," [2]New Statesman, February 3, 2003
The smoke had cleared enough for him to see bayonets flash in the distance, behind the wall, what looked like thousands of them, the wall itself appearing to rise out of the smoke as if produced by the artifice of some magician. --Kathleen Cambor, [3]In Sunlight, in a Beautiful Garden
The intuitive connection children feel with animals can be a tremendous source of joy. The unconditional love received from pets, and the lack of artifice in the relationship, contrast sharply with the much trickier dealings with members of their own species. --Frans De Waal, [4]The Ape and the Sushi Master
]
Etymology: [Artifice comes from artificium, from artifex, artific-, "artificer, craftsman," from Latin ars, art-, "art" + facere, "to make." It is related to artificial. ]

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
[Watching McPain engage in obligatory artifice on this morning's Fox & Friends was illuminating. It really is all about him and his movie.]

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Based upon my experience with a snow job at the Strattford in January - it wasn't even worth $10, let alone $100
But, still. Another customer plowed under.
And as to what it's worth - that parking lot is so tight, I charge him extra because of the risk.
I'm just kidding with you.........clearing that parking lot is worth a heck of a lot more than $100.........you need to grease a large vehicle just to maneuver in it, and that would be without snow.
And my employees tell me infant day care in FC is $1,700/mo. We have been charging $1,000/month.
On the other hand - the waiting list is up to three years...
Sitz = seat and platz = place, right? Maybe it's a question of dialects. My source studied it throughout college, in literature and conversation, from German Jesuits. His form may be more formal than yours. As for me, I studied French, so c'est la vie. ;)
to blabe...or not to blabe...LOL
No, no, no. He distinctly said to blave, which means to bluff. Name the movie.
sitzen - verb, transitive, to sit.
Platz - noun, masculine, seat
Nehmen Sie Platz - High (snotty, harvard-like) German idiom - "Take you a place." in englisch, "Please, sit down."
Princess Bride.
Have fun stormen the castle, boys!
Good job! It's one of my favorite movies. I thought blabe sounded too much like that line and couldn't resist throwing some extra credit your way.
Great minds think alike. That where "to blabe" struck me. LOL.
It didn't go well, either. ;)
I should quit posting corrections to myself.
$1,700 a month for infant daycare? OMG. I realize infant daycare is more time consuming, thus would be more costly than for an older child, but that is utterly ridiculous.
I realize costs for everything are different where you are compared to where I am, but even in Dover, the most prestigious private daycares didn't charge rates like that.
I think I'll stick with living in the low rent district!
But, as compared to ten rugrats over two.
So infants cost a lot more to house.
You're silly!
You're right - there are restrictions on the numbers - which is why it is justifiable for infant care to be higher than that for the older kids.
you want to speak German, go to Europe. We live in America, learn the language.
OMDEARGOD, the ego was in full bloom last night. SG, how did you not smack him senseless? oh i was valedictorian of my german class, ladedangda!
