A good plan might be to teach the kids to tell other people that it isn't okay to make commitments without clearing it with her parents. Surely if you told that to the parents, they would understand that. ..unless they are VI's too.

"The worse part is trying to be nice without upsetting these parents" Don't worry about being "nice." Just be honest. Tell them that your children didn't ask you first and that your family already had plans for the summer, then offer to take up the slack if they get in a bind with whoever does babysit.
