Lazamataz's Opus: No longer a Republican (Vanity)
Now | Me

Posted on 04/26/2005 7:27:21 AM PDT by Lazamataz

Well, they went and did it.

The Republicans look like they will wimp out, not exercise the so-called Nuclear Option, and Harry Reid will PERMIT two judges to be approved and disapprove four others. Does anyone think for a second the Democrats won't "go nuclear" in a heartbeat if the roles were reversed?

This seals the deal for me. I am a Republican no more. It seems it does not matter if I vote Republican anyways, all I get is more liberalism. I am a man without a political party. I am a conservative without a home.

Between Bushes enthusiastic embrace of illegal immigration, and our party's inability to get even moderately conservative judges approved, what's the freakin' point of voting Republican any more? What's the point of voting? I will get liberalism no matter how I vote. My main issue is guns, and it appears the Democrats have learned their lesson on that one, so it appears I will be safe on the firearms front. Everything else the Republicans stand for, they stand for in word only. They do not seem to want to act. Therefore, I do not seem to want to vote Republican any more.

This is my Opus -- not from Free Republic, but from the Republican party. Even when they have the majority, they surrender.

The Republican Party is the France of politics.

No, I can't, because that is not what happened. What happened was low intensity Dem voters stayed home because of Dem scandals in the House, and the tax increase, or switched their vote, and the same scandals and tax increase increased GOP turnout. There is no evidence that liberal Dems failed to show up at the polls in disproportionate numbers of which I am aware. This idea that base voters fail to vote, and vote the party line, rarely is supported by any tangible evidence. It is just a wet dream of some in this neighborhood.

We'll just have to disagree, then. I think the effect is real, you do not.

Fair enough. What might break the mold is the immigration issue, not this nonsense. On judges, the only game in town is the Pubbies. Period.

The immigration issue is one that has conservatives VERY angry. It's what had me up to the breaking point, then when I heard the news about a possible Republicave on judges, well, that was it for me.

A lot of freepers voted for Dubya on the "appoint some judges" issue. Heck, even JimRob's main thesis was, "Vote for Dubya so he can get us some conservative judges". So... the anger was palpable when it looked like they might cave yet again.

I must admit, I have never been as elated to be wrong. Not ever.

O'course, the proof is in the pudding. We're not there yet.

You should have read my posts. I knew it was nonsense from day one. Of course the Pubbies can't give up on the nuke option. This is all about moving the pawns around to knock off the rook, and lay the traps for the votes. This is all about SOCTUS. Analysis, analysis, analysis, and think, think, think, my boy, and soon enough you will want to be a lawyer, which will finally afford you the tools to make your mark on the world. Plus the pay is better than being a tech grunt, and your job is not exportable or subject to competition from illegals.

Perhaps we should be 'the Free Republican Party'.

I think that would be a party I'd join. What are the basic principles? I have a couple idears...

1) Enforce the Constitution--limit the federal government to its Constitutional duties.
2) Make the federal government carry out its constitutional duties--protect the borders and provide for a common defense.

What else you got that fits in with most every conservative, yet won't piss off a libertarian freeper?

I have an open mind. I will consider your point of view.

I will not, however, EVER be a lawyer. Heck, it's too late to change careers, and I'm not going back to school in my 40's. Besides, I love computers. I really do. I have a gift with them -- some of my coworkers take a while to analyse a problem, or program a solution, but I (seriously) can kinda just swoop in and approach things from a really high level and undercut most of their times by an order of magnitude.

Well, hold on for a tick -- if I'm going to have an open mind about your other points of view, perhaps I should at least LOOK at lawyerin'. Maybe I could be a fancy schmanzy high-tech lawyer wot specialized in computer law.

Some 'libertarians' may not like my personal first principle, one which is not negotiable: That the fundamental right to life is God-given and therefore inalienable...from conception to natural death.

This principle is the cornerstone of our free republic.

Life and liberty, property. In that order.

Perhaps you can be the Conservatives in the Republican party?

Look, I am in full agreement with all of you but the way to change things is from inside the GOP, not outside.

We are the ones that generate most of their funding, I for one have stopped being s lavish and have explained to them why.

The real question here is how to counter the GOP's "liberalization". We can either do it from the outside or do it from the inside.

We have made real progress in knocking down these Rockerfeller Republicans. It has been a forty year march and I for one do not want to quit.

I am frustrated but we can work this out. Oh, post number 700 something? I guess I arrived way too late for this party.

Arioch7 out!

There you go. You like to mouth off, and the law is the place to do it. You also get so much better at it. :)

BTW, this appears to be a Thread of Great Reconciliation. First jveritas and I kiss and make up, and then you and I -- normally quite testy with one another -- seem to be getting along a little better.

I, for one, welcome the improved relations with my ideological kin.

Well now there you go. And at the risk of being minorly offensive, most lawyers I know are jerks, so I could be even more of a mouthy jerk than I am now. :o)

Seriously, I will give it a look-see.

I can just see the HBO special now: "Lazamataz, Geek Lawyer!"

We're not talking about personal principles. We're talking about government, and party platform. You want a prolife version imposing no abortion, as Roe imposed abortion on states, or can you simply accept the end of Roe and work in the states to stop abortion?

I would keep a prolife plank off the party platform beyond advocating an end to Roe, because I think the latter acceptable.

Oh I am just one big lovable fuzzball. I don't enjoy feuds. I don't enjoy personal attacks in general, unless very irritable. I really don't have much problem with dissent. Heck, I do it more than most on this forum. I have more of a problem with dummies and self indulgence, but usually I stay silent when I witness it.

most lawyers I know are jerks

Many are, but perhaps not all. :) Actually, the best lawyers are not jerks in my experience. Slip the knife in with love, is my motto. Often, the opposition is not even aware that they are being castrated.
