With foals that are going to be roan, you don't see any white hairs at first, and they actually appear to be born with a darker color than most solid color foals. The roan starts coming in a few weeks later, usually as a few white hairs widely scattered all over the body (down close to the skin) except for the face and legs. You'd never guess by looking at this picture of Hope that she was going to be a roan...

Nope - you're right... I'd have never guessed! Is roaning pretty dominant so you'd expect it from any foal from this momma? or does her daddy also add to that?

Cute baby - get some more pictures dometime today and get an opinion from you. Speed is light around her eyes and on her muzzle like the picture shows of Hope. Dusty has roaned out to look more like a leopard every day - the roaning is leaving spots. She didn't start that until she was over two though.
Appaloosa genetics are so strange. Dusty's sire and dam were both leopards - no roaning. The sire of this little girl is a leopard, with a leopard sire and a solid quarter horse dam.

And I did get to ride! Twice in fact. First time on a not too nice trail, on a horse they said was gaited...HA!
Second time we went into the National Forest. It was beautiful crossing streams, seeing turkeys. My 16 hand Appaloosa gelding "Cody"..so slow, we got way behind, and the trail boss yelled at me. I told her when we got back, that she didn't have to worry...lol
BTW Cowboy, I hated Gatlinburg...way too congested. Never thought at this time of year it would be. But, I sure did love that casino in Cherokee. :')
