This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Also in the foreground is a short obstacle where I just nailed some scrap 2x4 under it to raise it.
These pics are from last summer, the jump completely fell apart eventually. I need to make some prettier ones to work Cyn with a little.
We could do that pretty easy, but I think the skill saw is down at Charlie's. Anyway, I'm going to get them raised alot more one way or another the next time I ride him. I just never thought that was what she meant.

My pony is a disaster with them like that, if I put up poles or cavaletti right close together, she'll try to jump the whole show no matter how wide ;~D It confuses her and she just likes to jump.

These are cool... look like they are mounted to a square instead of a cross, and off-center so you can vary the height.
I love Iced Tea. It's my favorite summer drink. In a tall frosted glass with lots of ice and a straw.

Thanks. I feel rather a dunce. I really don't know if I "assumed" she meant on the ground, or if she said something that made me think that. I do know for sure she said cavaletti. But having them raised that much makes a whole lot more sense. I could see where 15 minutes of that would be a work out.

LOL. I've tried roses numerous times, and it wasn't till last year that I finally got one to grow. It is doing very well this year. It's the climbing kind, I have it on the fence around the patio. No buds yet, but its making lots of leaves and new branches.

Well, she may have said to start out with them on the ground, like the girl on the palomino pony has them.
Be careful with the wooden standards though becaue they rot, and they can get very very heavy. And they splinter. We had wooden standards for schooling that were just like that and they were SUCH a pain to move around. I'd invest in a set of standards, and then make your jump poles. It's worth it in my opinion. :-)
Yeah - they do get heavy. But heavy is good if the horse is going to knock them. My stallion was a riot with jumps that were in standards with cups. He'd knock it on purpose just to see if he could knock it down instead of jumping it. He'd sortof jump cavaletti that didn't fall down, if you made him do it ;~D
I've used cinder blocks with 4x4s or landscape timbers through the holes for jumps before. Not nearly as versatile as the "X"s, but pretty quick in a pinch.
That would work really well.
I believe Bob is adding a day for age, not for the number of foals. By the way, he called just a few minutes ago. Another friend (Wanda) had an Arab mare foal last night, another 365/364 days and a colt.
I generally figure 342 since that's average unless I know the mare's previous foaling history. I have one mare that generally foals between 324-330 but the rest have always gone 342 or longer.

HI, Ok, Becky I checked the link you have on the gestation.
Jet was bred on the 26th and 27th of April the table says April 3 or 4. Ok it is the 6th and I have no baby yet, should I be worried. She seems to be progressing well. Any advice?

If she's not in pain, not visibly ill then don't worry. It seems a lot of mares are going longer this year. Also, the table is based on 340 days which is the short end of average I think. I generally use 342 as average, although a lot of books will put it at 345.
Well that is what I figured, I am jsut watching her for signs of labor or anything of that nature. I figure when it is time then it will come.
