"Brandenn was taking biology at Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte, Neb., and had recently decided he wanted to become an anesthesiologist."

As an anesthesiologist, I can only say that I would have been honored to work with him...but what is disturbing is that the suicide rate among anesthesiolgists is among the highest when looking at physicians as a group.

I knew two...one apparently an accidental OD the other a very intentional OD related to longstanding depression.

It makes one wonder about the selection traits for the specialty...mostly self-selection I'd wager. More loners drawn to the field, etc?

This young man had much to offer, it's a shame he wasn't able to navigate adolescence. It's tough enough when you're one of the gang and not odd man out.

Why? What is your opinion on why it is so high?

anesthesiologist

A friend who is a doctor refers to anesthesiologist's as "mercy killers". You get a patient who is on his last leg and you give him a little gas. That's all it takes sometimes to move them over the edge.

Any idea why that might be?
