I don't think suicide is a decision made in the intellect

Quite right. Ed Schneidman the first and foremost suicidologist (who also incidentally studied suicide among the gifted) demonstrated convincingly that all this pawing through the debris looking for proximate causes is bunk. There is no demographic or historical causation which yields anywhere near useful explanatory or predictive value.

Suicide occurs when, against a background of enduring emotional pain, some precipitating event triggers action. And no one can predict reliably what that will be, or what might be the source of the pain. The person usually doesn't talk about it, or let on. We know mental illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia are risk factors but even with them the false positives are prohibitively large.

It would therefore especially behoove those who don't even know the person to forgo the luxury of pointless judgmentalism and post-mortem speculations. It is a tragedy for the loved ones and that is the main lasting consequence.

Well, my God is an all loving, all forgiving God. Too bad, yours isn't.

Are we playing "my God is better than your God" ??? If that's the case there'll be no winner.

This is not a thread to start getting into a pissing contest over semantics, to be honest.

Can you point out the so-called "semantics" ?

Sadly, we see alot of sad endings for child geniuses like this boy.

They're so busy being adults, they're robbed of those normal childhoods.

I read another story a few years ago about another child genius who is now lost to mental illness as an adult.

Let's hope this death was a tragic accident and not the result of too much pressure put on him too soon

I’d say you’re correct.

It’s stress. More people are killed on the operating table by anesthesiologists than surgeons.

I have a friend who recently retired from the profession. The premiums for his liability insurance were more than $200K per year.

Geeze grey_whiskers.

You’re so bored you’re digging up threads more than 2 years old?

The long and the short of it; thank you for your insight.

LOL!

I came across this in a link from another thread which was *much* fresher.

Apologies for my massive cluelessness.

As cruel as it may sound, but self-murder has no forgiveness.

You don't know whether it does or not. And he was a CHILD. AND the "damnation" of someone who commits suicide is best left in the hands of the only One qualified to do so.

I’ve come to realize that many Christians seem to think they are.

Any updates? A brief google search shows some apparently heartfelt but non-helpful comments on something called the blogofdeath — a disturbingly macabre website in my opinion — and a referenced essay in the New Yorker magazine issue of January 19th, 2006. The reference is from http://ihatethenyer.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html.
