'Cheers' star Kirstie Alley has been attacked by members of the world's leading eating disorders group for joking about 'life threatening diseases' like bulimia on her new comedy show 'Fat Actress.'
Officials at the National Eating Disorder Center are furious with the actress for trivializing eating disorders during the debut of her new program.
In one scene, co-star Kelly Preston tells Alley's character that making herself sick after every meal is one way of losing weight- a practice commonly used by bulimics.
NEDA CEO Lyn Grefe says, 'My guess is that Kirstie Alley's concept for the show was born from her frustrations with the unreasonable standards found in the entertainment industry, frustrations that the NEDA understands.'
'However, there is nothing funny about eating disorders, and to make comic references to bulimia is dangerous.'
Nearly 10 million women and one million men suffer from this problem and it is estimated that another 25 million suffer from binge eating disorders.

Well, I'll tell you, I'm fed up with the bulemics. I've had it up to here!
She's great for my hubby's diet...every time the commercial comes on with her dancing I tell him "Hey baby, there's your girlfriend again" and he gets nauseaous.
I thought Kirstie's show got cancelled because they couldn't fit her all in one TV frame.
That's what my dad always says when Candy Crowley comes on.
Gluttony is not a disease.
Okay, I watched the pilot on Yahoo. Where was the humor? Thirty-four minutes of watching a blimp sized tart trying to be funny was not pretty. But this is supposed to be funny? How? What is funny about "the Michelin woman" living in her own world without a clue as to what reality is? As to bulemics being upset, this woman is a caricature and is out of touch with reality so how does what she does affect anyone at all? Oh, I forgot, we are talking about the mindless boob-tube addicts. Never mind.
I didn't watch, but I think people with eating disorders also have humor disorders. Can't they take a joke? Seriously, we are going to end up in a humorless state like the USSR where the FEC decides the bounds of acceptable discourse on the media. Nice to see that Scientologists have their own show now. Wouldn't you know it's about one of their dysfunctional, rich members?
BTTT
EAT ME !!
I'm sure they're just sick about it.
Agreed. I thought it was hilarious!
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
I think Garofalo's got her beat.
I laughed when the guy in the bathroom called Kirstie a 'hot vulcan.'
I am fast losing patience AND sympathy for ANY group that finds SOMETHING to whine about under every rock.
Ditto That!
I seem to remember just recently reading about a rash of DU posters posting stereotypical "conservative" posts.
WE aren't bigots. YOU apparently are. You'd be happier posting somewhere else.
I could care less how much Kirstie weighs. She's still a beautiful woman.
