I'm curious.... when a new pope is seated, how does that happen? Is there a hierarchy and and heir-apparent, or will there be a nomination process, or _____?

The cardinals choose the next pope - they each get one vote, and the new pope has to get at least two-thirds of the votes. Basically they just keep voting until that happens, I believe.

Heh...I tried to find an explanation that wasn't long winded, but most gave a long history. This one seems pretty basic: From Ask Yahoo...
