The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Hey, do you have a Deals Dollar Store where you live? You should check it out if you like low-carb convenience foods. They have all kinds of stuff, bread mixes (just add water) brownie mixes, nutrition bars and cereal that is low(er) carb. Brand name too, like CarbWell. I pay over $3 for the cereal normally and it's only a buck at Deals.

I bought a bunch of stuff and froze it. Granted, they are LOWER carb than other mixes and cereals, but still not low enough to get away with pigging out on...like Braums Ice Cream. ;-)

I don't think so but I don't pay much attention to dollar stores. Maybe I should.

I finally found a good Moose Tracks low-carb ice cream so I'm pretty happy. But lately I've been loosely low-carbing; no bread, potatoes, pasta or rice, but if the chicken has been battered, or if I want popcorn, that's ok. It's sort of working. I need to get my act together and go really low carb but that's hard.

Well, I think a little batter in the maintenance phase is ok. But like these things I got for Steve are treats. I'll make up that brownie mix and cut it into pieces, freeze it and he can grab one now and then for his lunch. Same with the bread. He prefers his bread toasted, so I freeze his bread and he just gets it out a slice at a time.

Howdy....

ecurbh is going to buy a new DVD player on the way home, if he finds one that seems right. Ours has been failing... starting to spin disks, but just making a clicking sound... lots of open/close stop/starts to get it to play. It finally got too frustrating to be worthwhile last night.

My favorite fish batter is:

3/4 cup flower, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar

stirred together in enough ice water to get right thickness

Then fold in an egg white, beaten until it peaks and seems stiff

Wait until you see bubbles floating up in batter

Dip fish pieces in batter and put in hot oil in skillet, flipping until brown. Cast iron skillet is the way best!

If you put a bamboo chopstick in the oil and the chopstick bubbles, then you know the oil is hot enough to start cooking with, though for sure you will have to adjust warmer and cooler as you fry. A tooth pick works nearly as well, though it bubbles at a slightly cooler temp.

My own recipe and my only personal claim to fame in cooking!

How'd that happen that you have an extra? Does it play all the computer files like VCDs and mpegs? We've used that versatility alot for ahem coookies.

I just called, he's looked at Good Guys and Fred Meyer so far and hadn't bought one yet. He was gonna hold off anyway.

I had to get a new one for the wedding. I forget why... OH... yeah, I needed a new CD player to play the music and ended up getting one that did CD/DVD and had a changer. So... my old Sony DVD player is just sitting there with nothing to do.

This is the one that didn't like the MPEG's though... Its supposed to be able to play them but it didn't work for those for some reason.

Well... I can't vouch for the VCD's and MPEG's. As I recall it might be a Sony thing. Licensing squabbles. But it is their top of the line DVD player, fer what that's worth. If'n ya want it you can have it.
