The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FOUR

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - thread ONE
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

Good morning.

Wow...Hair, so is your problem solved?

Maybe mommadoo's daugther should start a business traveling the country taking care of Freepers animals/houses, while they're on vacation.

So I see:)

It looks to be a beautiful day here. After breakfast and our errands, I'll finish some work in my garden, then ride Harley. It's so nice the days getting longer.

Sounds like a good idea! :~D

She still has a couple hours to think and decide, we're going to talk at 7 my time and finalize this idea. It was really rainy here last night and I really like the idea of someone skilled being here so the horses don't have to be out in it if it rains. I hope it doesn't though, I think Markie'd be awful disappointed to get nothing but wet here. Maybe it's getting it all out of it's system now.

Markie

Hey, nice to have you posting:)

Running barrels. That's great. I have just in the last year gotten serious about barrels. I think I've got the "correct" way to do it down, and am working on speeding up. Being alot older:), I'm a bit more cautious then a younger person would be so speed is something I'm haveing to get comfortable with, but my horse and I are getting there.

There use to be a lady in this neighborhood who had a Qh/Arab that she ran barrels on. She did very well. It's a good combination if the horse has the QH mind.

So you have a local roundup club, or jackpots that you would go to too run?

Keep us informed on your progress.

Good morning all. A clear fine day here in the Texas Hill Country but we do need rain, need it bad. But that's the usual state of things here. Except when we are being flooded out. It's not the kind of soil that holds water.

Wow! I miss out on posting just for one weekend and all sorts of stuff happens!
HAIR: Sorry to hear about your horse sitter Hair, but it looks like your problem is solved, How reasuring to have mommadooo3s daughter, who sounds very responsible and obviously adores horses and has experience, looking after yours while you are gone. I am glad that you have found each other.
Hi LAINIE, I am pretty much a novice with horses, we have only had our 2 years. I have 3 children who are learning the ropes as am I! I know that most on here will shake their heads about this, but yesterday I went into the field where our new horse Smokey is and put a halter on him, lead rope, took down the electric fence gate, led him over to the hitching post, tied him and brushed him all over. Then led him back when finished. I did it all by myself as deaconjim wasnt here and I felt proud! It's the first time i have EVER put any tack on a horse! I also have a broken arm! LOL
In december and January both our mares foaled. I got the experience first hand, especially with Thunder as deaconjim was at work and i got to imprint the new colt and rub him down. I Didnt stop shaking till 24 hours later!
Up till we got the horses, I have been terrified of them> I sadly lost a friend when one reared and it threw her and she broke her neck. I had nightmares for a good 10 years after that. I am gradually getting more confident. I have my favorite horse Sugar who has helped me so much. She loves me and I love her.
I have also been helping deaconjim with the colts a bit, but am limited right now.
Having the horses has made me realise what I have been missing all these years.
BECKY: good afternoon! Did you get your plants planted? Has it warmed up there? I got sunburnt taking care of the horses yesterday, we have a beautiful day again today. : )

I REALLY hate to make up a long list of rules that sound too lawyerly, but I've been working on a list of rules and understandings I am considering just to make sure we understand each other and can ensure her trip here is fun.

Tell me if you think we need to edit or add anything, and maybe the group will have suggestions from their own experience (if there is a group, it seems quiet today!)
Rules and Understandings

Horses: (real last names all redacted)

We all understand that horses are large animals and can be unpredictable. [Hair and ecurbh] are not responsible for injuries or expenses that may happen from riding or handling horses. [Mommadoo] will be responsible for all expenses and medical bills incurred by Markie. We trust that Markie will exercise caution and restraint at all times to prevent falls, injuries to horses or riders, or damage to property. Markie is not responsible for expenses to treat accidental injury or illness to the horses, as long as she seeks veterinarian assistance for any significant symptom or injury. If in doubt consult with mom or the members of the saddle club thread, and don't hesitate to call my vet if in doubt. (Dr.s phone number)

Front gate should be closed and locked at all times, especially when moving horses in the yard or opening any pasture or barn gate.

Horses should be ridden quietly and gently… no galloping or jumping, and cantering should only be done under control and on flat ground in the front pasture. Bay in particular should not be overworked, as he is aged and is being treated for symptoms of Navicular Syndrome, but both horses have been off most of the winter and are not in prime condition. Riding should be limited to lots of walking and brief periods of faster work, and if the horses get winded or hot, they should be slowed to a walk and rested.

Please use the tack that belongs to each horse as they are custom fitted. Which horse goes with which saddle/pad/bridle will be shown to you.

No taking the horses or dogs off the property.

Do not try to ride the pony. She is not broke, and can buck like the dickens.

Long distance phone: You aren't prohibited from making calls, in fact, feel free to call home with only a reasonable respect for the amount of long distance time. Please don't call friends long distance unless necessary, but feel free to have them call you.

Internet: Feel free to use the Internet on Diana's computer, just don't install anything new on it, leave all anti-virus software turned on, and update as directed by automatic update announcements.

Cable: There are some cable and on-demand movies that are free and some that are pay-per-view. You will be notified if there is a charge, but you only have to say yes to play these movies. You may watch a few pay per view movies if you like, but be responsible and try to stay under a total $20. Most are $4. You may also watch any of our DVDs.

Vehicles: We aren't able to leave you a vehicle to drive. If you need to go somewhere, please feel free to call my father at [number] and he'll make arrangements to take you anywhere you like.

Thanks. It can be overwhelming, I'm sure you know. I've seen people really get caught in their investments. I'm already a cautious kind of person so it's not going to be a problem (I hope), but watching people jump in feet first and then lose boatloads of money... let's just say, that cemented my approach. :) I'll wait for the right time, I'm good at that.

So, I took a look at our new ranch/riding friend's fee schedule for boarding. You guys weren't kidding! A shelter & small paddock, food, water, turning out, everything's included but it's like, hundreds of dollars per month. And that's not even including horse training. And this is the boondocks. Gee whiz.

Boarding here is $150/mo for pasture board, full care board can be $200-$300/mo depending on what luxuries are offered at the facility. - is that about what it is there?

Looks like you have thought of everything, it should leave you to enjoy your vavation and be nice for Markie. I love to go somewhere different, the air and scenery makes you feel so refreshed. Even though she has the animals to tend too, it's probably close to her dream vacation the way she feels about horses. : )
