*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I was wondering what the English/Irish/Scots call pudding. I am reading Patrick O'Brian's naval tales and every other page they are eating a pudding, including one called Spotted Dog.

Spotted Dick Pudding is a traditional British sponge pudding made with golden syrup, suet and raisins. Best served hot with custard.

If you want to make it!
Spotted Dick is basically a sponge pudding with currants in it, you can use the same recipe for treacle, jam, fruit, or any of your favourite flavours, simply use jam or fruit instead of currants, it's a very versatile recipe. This recipe is for 4 servings.

Ingredients:
168g (6ozs) of self raising flour
84g (3ozs) butter
84g (3ozs) sugar
1 level teaspoonful baking powder
Pinch of salt
Some milk and water
2 eggs
112g (4ozs) currants

Method:

Cream the butter and sugar together add the eggs and beat well to get plenty of air into the mixture.
Gradually add the sieved flour, baking powder and use as much of the milk and water as you need to keep the mixture soft.
Finally stir in the currants.
Steam for 2 to 2 hours and 30 minutes in a 2 pint bowl. You can make smaller individual puddings in smaller
bowls but will need to reduce the steaming time accordingly.

I don't hide shrubbery. I arrange, design, and sell shrubberies.

Don't believe it, Sharn. He does hide in the shrubbery. And he's obviously familiar with the cure for spotted dick.

I feel soooo much better! That antibiotic really started kicking in yesterday, no more green sludge. Still sludge, just not green. No sludge at all this morning. It's like a miracle. And thanks for asking.

When we get back to school next week, I'm going to mention all these english terms that I'm learning from you, to my english friend. She's gonna wonder how I know all of this stuff!

Gee, thanks Tuffy. That's what everyone needed this morning - the visual of green sludge coming out your nose.

Rose, got an England question for you (actually, several)

1. What's up with this queen stuff? Don't you think its time passed many moons ago?
2. Why aren't there any English restaruants here in the USA? Outside of Zidder Zee's, I can't think of any.
3. Prince Charles - would you?
