*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Do you body clip? I have to clip George from head to toe in summer and I'm terrible at it. He looks like a total dork when I get finished but I don't want to pay someone a hundred bucks to do it. What am I doing wrong?? He always has track marks and little tufts that I've missed. When I go back to get the tufts, I make an even bigger mess. Am I clipper-ly challanged?

The key to the perfect body clip is very sharp blades changed often, and to always run exactly against the direction of the hair with exactly the same blade angle against the skin... it's impossible to do it ~perfect~ of course, with all the cowlicks and wrinkles and tough spots to even get the clipper in. I always body clipped at least two weeks before show, and again a few days later, to clean up any missed spots and corderoy marks ;~D

It's not just you. The same thing happens to me, but it usually clears itself up when the remaining winter hair falls out. I guess with George, it just never does. Having good sharp clipper blades helps though.

Do you use the regular dog-sized clippers or do you use the livestock sized ones?

I have a selection of clippers, since I was blaming the clipper and not the operator. I have 2 of the cordless ones, I have the big Oster clipmaster and I have one of those Oster A5 Turbo jobs, I like that one the best. Even though the clipmaster does a great job on thick hair, it's heavy and loud.

Deaconjim had to read that to me and explain it! LOL
I remember when I first came over ot sounded like there were no breaks between the words, just one long word!
Y'allwontsumpintaeat? Very hard to understand! LOL
I still get teased because I don't always understand what is being said : ) I also get asked a lot of questions, as does Emma, as people say they like to hear me speak. Very embarrasing, good way to clam me up!
The very first time I heard Deaconjim speak I told him he sounded like Elvis! LOL
I like the Texas twang!

They are supposed to pick her up the 17th or 18th - they say they will let me know for sure with a time window the day before.

No we won't body clip her, just clip her face and ears and bridle path. Body clipping is really difficult, we did it with a weanling about seven years ago. We clipped against the hair. Decided then not to try it again. :)

Maybe use an attachment on the clippers to keep the hair all a certain length. That's what I used to do with my cocker spaniel when I clipped him.

Here I am. Where is Kreutz market?

There is a general store in Utopia that cuts their own meat, from local cattle, and it is incredibly good.

You got that right. I've got one of those too. It'll wear your arm out and when you crank 'em up on high they are pretty darn loud. But they take that old long winter hair off in huge swaths. Makes the job go a whole lot faster. Another good thing about 'em is when you get a yearling colt used to them, using anything else on 'em is a piece of cake. :o)
