*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

If you make a post without any html in it, not even the < p > marks... you can copy paste links into text and they'll work.

I just called the AAEP in Kentucky and the woman who answered the phone had no idea what I was talking about. She transferred me to someone else and I had to leave a message.

If this was as prevalent has being insinuated on this forum, surely whoever answers the phone up there would have heard about it. As a matter of fact, I expected the phone lines to be tied up. Nope, I got straight through and they answered on the first or second ring.

Well, I don't know if you'd call approximately 100 horses prevelant or not. Since this information just got to vets this week, I also don't know who would be aware of it at any particular office.

Basically, I don't know what you are trying to say I guess.

The vet I talked to at the AAEP said that she was aware of this internet information going around but said she knows of no vets who have seen it, treated it or have called them about it. They said more than likely it's a hoax.

Anything is possible I suppose. I don't believe it's a hoax but I've read quite a bit of the posts of people with horses involved (and seen the pictures of the horses). It's your prerogative to believe whatever you want though.

Several of the posters about this illness said that the AAEP is involved. So I called the AAEP and in between trying not to laugh, she said that no AAEP vets were treating this so called "whisper" illness, syndrome, whatever.

What's going on today:)? Anyone riding? I've been outside all day with JP. If Kristy comes and gets him before it's to late, I will ride Rusty in the arena. Actually looking forward to it.

He's enjoying it as well as can be hoped for with a job! So far, he knows how to do what they need done and the people are good to be around.

I'm showing my ignorance....but what is the AAEP?

Are they someone who would be in contact with the vets of Virginia?

Are they someone who can PROVE or DISPROVE the hoax?

I'm NOT trying to insult you or discredit you. So, PLEASE don't think that my questions indicate such.

But if these AAEP folks are able to verify it's all a hoax, I'll be able to rest a little easier...and will know to go on a 'mission' to 'correct' this John Holland and the undue panic he is spreading.

***'I have a list SOMEWHERE for all the different states'***

Sorry. I've searched my 'puter's 'guts' and cannot find that chart. I could only find the Ohio charts. I KNOW it's in here somewhere, LOL.

I'll do a google to find the chart for Texas. I'll probably have to FReep mail it to ya, because my HTML skills are not that good.

Even if it ends up that there is no real epidemic that is new or unusual, I don't wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the guy doesn't fervently believe what he's saying...

I just think he may be just over-reacting to the sudden and unusual death of his horse... And it would only take a few others to tell their anecdotes to start a cycle where the story feeds itself.

If no media or veterinary agency is yet acting on it after ~this~ much time and exposure, I'd start to relax more and more about the fear that our horses are really at risk.

The lady in a coma. The email wanted you to contribute money every third line. You said you were going to cash in your 401(k) and send it to them before Becky slapped you up the side of the head and convinced you otherwise.

Two years ago we had an epidemic here in our area of pigeon fever. It lives in the ground and takes the right conditions to set it off. We had the right conditions.

John Holland is not claiming an epidemic of any sort. He is saying approximately 100 horses died over a several state area of a disease/infection that vets were unfamiliar with or could not diagnose. Evidence that he has collected via the Internet in the past week seems to support that. The theory currently is that Listeria may (note - may) be the cause. While Listeria does hit horses, it is not common in them, is frequently fatal and is difficult to diagnose. It is common in cattle and goats. (It is also fatal to hogs)

By the way, one of my vets confirmed this. She also confirmed that the symptoms described would describe Listeria. I hope that anyone with an ill horse showing these symptoms in the affected areas does not assume that this is a hoax, treat their horse as for colic or something similar without mentioning this possibility to their vet.

Another FYI, as far as I know, Kentucky is not one of the effected states.
