*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I have owned horses for the last 20 years.. I currently only have one horse, a thoroughbred that is now 25 years old. I only do ring and trail work with her now, Used to hunt, steeplechase, 3 day event with my horse, However she is not up to that anymore.

Any new info on the mysterious illness? My vet doesn't know anything about it.

No news that I know of... but I'm not as connected to the sources as some of the others.

What kind of grass are they grazing on? I know mold growing in some grasses can be the culprit. These molds release toxins including mycotoxins, fungal endophytes, and phytoestrogens, being the three most possible evil culprits.

Also, do you have tent caterpillars on your land? A mycotoxin called zearalenone is associated with them. Zearalenone has been connected with eye, cardiac and reproductive problems in horses. There is also a
theory is that thesee tent caterpillars feed on the leaves of the certain sugars. Yup, so what, right? Well, under the right conditions, these substances can produce cyanide, as in cyanide poisoning. I'd have to do more research to find if there is a particular tree causing this.

If your grass isn't growing well yet and you have tent caterpillars on your land your horses may be grazing down to the ground coming in close contact with the caterpillars. Tent caterpillars are immune to the cyanide, and actually use it as a defense against predators. They carry it on their bodies, excrete it on the ground and actually 'spit it out' when they feel threatened.

Not sure if this helps but I wanted to offer it all the same.

Are you getting ready to pray? Not sure how they do things in your neck of the woods but we typically start our prayers with "Dear Lord". Not sure if He'll pick up the phone if you holler "Oh Gawd".

I think they've discounted molds, as I think that would bring on colicky, rather than neurological symptoms.

Can't say anything about caterpillars.

Glad to see state vets getting in on this! I wonder if this IS somehow coming from the Canadian PMU's?

No baby......bummer! You WILL have pix when it gets here, RIGHT?

If anyone is HTML savvy, here is the addy of the Yahooo group started JUST FOR this illness.

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/whisper_syndrome/messages/1

The guy (John Holland) had said that he wasn't going to clutter up all the OTHER Yahooo BB's with his messages, so he started this one.
