*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - thread ONE
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

Thanks... here's her photo.

We bought her at Sugarcreek's horse auction. (Meat market.) Paid a whoppin' 90.00 for her. Hubby gave me HECK for buying her. I did it while he was off talking to someone. hehehe

I don't know much on her. She was part of a herd that ALL looked like this. My heart went out to her because she was in the 'killer pen' trying to look 'invisible'. Face stuck in the corner, trembling with fear.

She's about 2. Feet look like skis. Doesn't like people coming near. Flinches at loud noises. But when she DOES allow ya near, she's VERY appreciative of the pets and massages. She's also VERY curious about what you're doing.

BTW....if you look at her right fore, follow her hoof line, you'll see a thin line of white snow. That's where her hoof ends.

Bay is holding weight just fine, have his teeth done once a year, and though I fed him senior pellet for awhile, I've actually switched him back to the same 12% COB mix that the other horses eat. He can still get too fat.

His limitation is that he has Navicular, though not too bad, he still moves really well on pads and Ixosuprine, which is mixed in with his grain morning and night. Because of his feet, I really limit things like lunging or round penning, lots of trotting in circles would break him down. He's a light trail horse now, I've known him through a few owners before he came to me. He was an endurance racer in a former life.

Here's some pretty recent pics of him, running loose on a warm day when he got to take his winter blanket off, and one where I was just putzing around our property bareback. Our other horses, a pony and my husband's Arab/Mustang mare are following.

Wow... I for one, appreciate you giving her a chance. Is that your husband there with her? I think my husband would cringe and expect me to do the same thing if I were to find myself at one of those sales.

You done good :)

Here's an update on the Whisper syndrome - Found this update on another board:

UPDATE!

Several of you have posted about related diseases in goats and even humans. I missed this at first because there is a fungal disorder that sounds very similar and I knew that this was a gram positive bacterial disease and not fungus.

Kyle S. just helped me hit the jackpot because he recognized the symptoms from his goats. Amy in Texas was the first to put the disease out as something to look at.

There is very little information on this in horses.

This is a rare and often fatal bacterial infection that is known in Icelandic horses.

We have all speculated Whisper Syndrome is an import! Bingo

http://www.cavalor.com/nutritionitem.php?id=175

It was very prevalent in PMU horses which came from Canada. It occurs in Winter from feeding grass silage on the ground! Bingo It causes gastroenteritis and septicemia.! Bingo

It is gram positive (thus penicillin would not be effective but Naxcel would) Bingo

Survival has been reported now with Tucoprim which is also effective against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Another survivor had was treated with SMZ (Spectrim or Bactrim) which is also effective against gram positive bacterium. Bingo!

It causes stiff necks in humans and similar symptoms in goats. This explains the Whisper twist.

Interestingly, not a single case of Whisper syndrome was reported to me as being diagnosed as Listerosis.

YUP, that's hubby. (Mark)

While he was chewing me out, he said 'how the hell are you gonna get a horse home in a CAR???' I smiled as sweetly as I could and said that God would get her a ride.

LOL...she GOT a ride! (from some folks hubby knows from the county, up the road from us)

We just paid $300.00 to rent a 70 acre field. Do you know HOW MANY horses can comfortably live there?? (hehehe)

I look forward to seeing your progress with her, and the others now certain to show up ;~D

Any idea where she came from? To be thrown out as garbage at age two.... gotta wonder if whoever foaled her knows what happened, or if they are the ones that let this happen to her... Bred her but invested no time or effort into her? Or raised her to sell for the meat market. They lost money at $90, I hope they don't find that worth it. Good for you.

She has made progress so far. She's gone from TOTALLY WILD and BALLISTIC(she nearly WENT OVER their 10 ft. gates at the auction house), to part-time approachable. Her hips that were sticking out and SHARPLY defined are starting to round over. Yesterday, when hubby was approaching her with hay, she WHINNIED to him and walked right up to him.

At this past Friday's sale, the highest horse sold for 875.00. Good broke and a family pet. It went on a meat wagon. The rest of the horses sold for 400.00 and under. MANY sold for 125.00.

Breaks my heart.

It really depresses me to think about it... to imagine that the same thing is going on near me and all over. I think it's to our shame. People really do a lot of wrong things, able to make a mess of most things we get involved in.

I am pleased for your rescue though, that she'll get this chance... what are you naming her? And what is your plan with her, after some foot care and some groceries can get her back in good health?

Is that mass of black under her neck all mane?

It wouldn't matter if you have horses or not, if your kids go barefoot and step on something rusty, tetanus is always a possibility. It's not because of the horses. (my kids go barefoot, too. They're supposed to, they're kids!)

Hmmm, about the strangles, I'm inclined to think that your daughter getting strep was a coincidence. I've checked several resources and none of them are saying that a horse with strangles can give strep to a human. I'll have to do more research, interesting question.

Saddest thing I've read in a long time. I may have to go to the auction and rescue one or 2.

Our 11y.o. daughter named her Twister. THIS child is the most tenderhearted and 'deep' child I've ever seen. I have a feeling she'll want to claim the horse as her own. She's been drawing pictures of her. LOL.

Twister is getting plenty of groceries and good hay. She likes the sunflower seeds we've been adding. And I noticed that there's NO SIGN of the probiotics I topdress with.

I just wish we could speed up the trusting issue. That way hubby can get to work on those hooves.

I have to make a conscious effort to NOT think about the sale Friday. I 'bout broke down and cried to see all those beautiful horses being herded into the killers' trailers. It must've been obvious, cuz hubby looked at me strangely, when they were running by.

Sorry.

Yeah, that black that shows under her neck is mane. Here's her other side..........

Her mane near her withers is all twisted together. Nothing a little baby oil and brush won't fix.

What state are you in? How often do they have an auction? What day of the week?

OH MY GOD, I can't believe someone let that poor horse get into such miserable shape. Did you say she's only 2 years old? Is she a mustang?

I sure hope you're right.

Right now, I'm fighting a severe sore throat/fever. New horse has been snotting and coughing. And she won't co operate to get a shot. (vet said to either give her a FULL run of antibiotics or just let it run the course.) A little antibiotics is worse than none.

I'm probably just sick from all the 'romps' in the frigid air with Twister. LOL.

If you do a rescue you will be IMMENSELY BLESSED!!!

We did two others, and found that the horses bond SO DEEPLY with you, it's 'weird'. It's as if they sense WHAT you did for them.

I'll do more research and find out. I've had horses for 35 years and that included nursing sick ones and I've never gotten sick from them. I do, however, have 5 kids and get everything under the sun that they bring home!

We're in Ohio. 'Our' auction is EVERY Friday. It's deep in Amish country.

I have a list SOMEWHERE for all the different states that run these auctions and the days they're on, plus the times. I'll post it when I find it. OR FReep mail it to you.

LOL...hubby is out getting me 'cow pills'. Terramyicin.(sp) We got a notice from school last week that said Scarlet Fever is going around.

I HATE public schools.

We have 6 kids but only 3 are in 'regular' school.
