*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - thread ONE
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

Some of us are just on opposite sides of this argument.

I really don't want anyone to think I'm cheap or rude, though. Normally, I'm neither. Just realistic.

How're you doing?

Well, hard to say. She might have paid that for the horse. 'Course she might have gotten it free too. It might have great bloodlines. Somewhere along the line though, she got the impression that the horse was worth something in that neighborhood.

LOL

I've walked away when my husband was bargaining. I don't know why it would embarrass me, he was doing the right thing and more often than not, got what he wanted.

It's just that honest horse sellers are as rare as grown women at michael jackson's house.
LOL Ain't that the truth.

Well, hard to say.

We have a winner! The fact is most of the time you don't know. People who get "insulted" for the most part are running a scam on ya or don't need to be dealing with ANYBODY, they should stay in their makebelieve world and let somone else do the dealing out in the real world.

And she didn't insult anybody asking $3000 for a 10 year old untrained horse that she probably got burned on?

Well, she didn't insult me. She can ask 3 mil and I still wouldn't bat an eye.

Her property, her price. My interest would be pure speculation with perhaps a little bit of greed mixed in.

Oh I don't think that any of us are saying that you're cheap. You did what you felt was best even though there's a disagreement over it. :-) That's all that matters. Do you mind posting the link? I'd like to take a peak at the horse. If he is indeed an off the track horse, he's probably nuts and not worth her asking price (if that's the case) Needs someone with a good head on their shoulders.

I think it's also possible he's just a hot horse, and she's just too meek or inexperienced to handle him. I trust Bay with my life, but he's hot enough to initmatidate a beginner that would be frightened if he snorted at something.

This horse very well may be worth $3000 to an experienced hunter jumper. They pay a lot more than that for green prospects. He's sight unseen for us, and wasn't worth more than $800 to Tuffy as a resale prospect. All this discussion really demonstrates is that horse pricing is the more art than science. A horse's value can be all over the board depending on who you are and what you intend to do with the horse.

I'm gonna have to throw the BS flag on this play.

I've dealt with blow-hards trying to low-ball me on trades, and, I don't know if I was insulted, but I do know that I was damned pissed off. And not because I was trying to 'run a scam'.

Look! This discussion ain't gonna get resolved until all of you agree with me. I'm Scots/Irish. I can drag this out forever.

Now! Do You Capitulate!

I insulted someone selling a horse once, and they were only asking $300 for it. I offered $100. I know these people got this horse for nothing. They know nothing about horses, and the horse wasn't, IMO as gentle as they thought. He was unbroke and had nothing done with him. I think the man would have taken the 100 just to not have to mess with feeding anymore, but the wife "loved" the horse and seemed insulted by the 100 offer.

You bet. Go to www.agdirect.com and in the horse name box, put "across the line". I'll even copy and paste her emails.

I don't get insulted unless someone calls me a bad name. I can't imagine getting insulted over someone placing a lowball offer on a horse. That's just dumb. Maybe she was just acting insulted in the hope I'd up my price. I had one person trying to sell me a horse that told me I couldn't afford $2000 for him. I've since learned that's a seller's tactic, hoping you'll say, "I darn sure can and I'll show you, here's $2000!"

He's probably worth that... just not to you. You're prospecting that you think he's really worth more with work or you wouldn't have wanted him.

I wouldn't worry about it. If she still has him in a few months, maybe she'll capitulate ;~D
