*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

LOL...I'm insulted. :)

I can't tell you how many times I've been insulted buy a buyer, how dare they try to low ball me? So what if I had that 1991 Mustang priced at $4000 when you could buy them all day long at $2500, well MINE was special!!! :)

As far as I'm concerned THAT insult was just the shot that said "Let the Games Begin"

OBTW I did get $4000 for that car, there's an ass for every seat if you wait long enough. :)

I've never heard that one before, I'm gonna have to use it!

My husband runs into that attitude alot, he buys land. Everybody thinks their land is worth more than the surrounding land. So what if the area property goes for $10,000 an acre, ours is worth $20,000! Or, they can't accept what the property is worth, they need more money to retire on! (we've run into that one several times)

I am never good at dickering. I just never do it. I'll either pay the price, or not. And I do that knowing most people overprice things expecting dickering. It almost seems like a pride issue with me, not wanting to act like the decision is about money. It seems like if I offer less, it's because I can't afford more. My dad is the same way, maybe it's just genetic.

Like ecurbh's horse Cyn. She was $1200, the woman was probably expecting us to offer $1000. She probably would have taken it. Instead, I didn't care about the price, I just wanted to try her for a week, that's what I dickered about. If she turned out to be right, $1200 was a fair price.

I only dicker on horses. If I go to the flea market or garage sales, I don't dicker. It's just that people in the horse business are the most dishonest people in the world. You can't sell a horse without either flat out lying or leaving out little pieces of information, I've done it myself. I didn't tell the guy that bought Juma that he bucked my ass off. He's a professional trainer so I figured he'd do the right thing. Also, I sold him for less than he was actually worth, I guess I felt guilty about not coming clean. The buyer didn't even try to negotiate, he knew he was getting a great deal and since he's won $6000 just this year so far on Juma, the only loser in this deal was me.

I had an appaloosa horse that was given to me and he was a piece of crap, very little training, over 10 years old and he also ran off with me in the round pen. We must have done 20 laps before I got him stopped. I sold him without telling the buyer that he ran off with me but I sold him for the killer price. I did tell the buyer that they didn't need to ride him until he went to a professional trainer.

Boy have I got a deal for you. :)

I ask for a better price on most everthing I buy, I bought a pair of Red Wing boots one time and the asking price was $125 I told the guy thats way too high and he was gonna have to do better then that, he went and looked up his cost and said "would $85 be OK?" I said sure thing! I saved $40 bucks for asking one simple question.

I even beat em down at Wal Mart, you would be amased how often they will come down.

I buy a lot of stuff to resale and you make your money when you BUY not when you sell.

Hair your're leaving money on the table when ya don't play the game, I mean almost EVERYBODY asks more then they want.

Only in America will someone go to the mall and pay full bore retail and put it on a 21% credit card. :) The whole rest of the world plays the game.

I've heard that you can dicker for prices at large stores but I've never known anyone who actually did it. I'll be darn, I have been leaving money on the table. The only time I've dickered at a regular store was when it was the last item on the shelf and it was slightly damaged.

Not me, no way, I neeeevvver do that. ;)

I know that... I know there is a game going on that a lot of people really get into.

If you offer something for sale and the price seems worth paying to me, I'll either pay it or not. I just really hate playing games, and I hate the idea that prices depend on who the dumbest person is. The game drives me bonkers... Especially on horses, where price is really just a stab in the dark, having more to do with the market you shop them to than any inate hard value for the horse. In Cyn's case, $1200 is about what people spend for trail horses, and she seemed she'd do the job. She's probably the easiest to price horse I've ever seen. She's no show horse, and she can't run fast. Her only job is trail. Horses like Harley are tougher, because they could be applied to disciplines that make money and be worth more, or used for trail where people usually spend less. My pony too, is tough. She's pretty enough to pony club, where they buy ponies for $10,000 trained. Unbroke to a back yard, she's worth a couple hundred. Her value is entirely in what's put into her and where she's marketed.

I ~have~ ventured to dicker when I think something is truly too much. Like this place... the fences were all down, the pasture overgrown with brush, and garbage (six truckloads) needed to be cleaned up from around the property. The trailer is beyond it's useful life in every way, and they wanted a deposit that was two month's rent. I said, I'll do all the work to clean it up, but I won't pay a damage deposit on a place where I corrected all the damage. So we made a deal, no deposit, and I won't make them pay to clean it up. They did pay to haul the garbage, but I piled it.

The last computer monitor I bought was at Best Buy, they had several at $150, I told the guy I'll give you $100 for one right now and handed him a $100 bill, he went and talked to his manager and came back with a receipt for a $100 bucks and said that the monitor was mine. All ya gotta do is ASK! :)

The smartest thing I've ever heard anyone say regarding buying and selling horses was, "horses are only worth so much per pound, if you can get more than that, good for you!" This was from a seller when I was looking for a horse before I bought Winnie. I really liked this woman's attitude, she had the horse priced reasonably, we just didn't connect with her.

$1200 was reasonable for Cyn, I probably wouldn't have tried to negotiate, either. I paid $3500 for Winnie and (go easy on me, Mack) I didn't try to negotiate because I thought the price was reasonable. Plus I was sick to death of visiting with a bunch of lying, cheating horse sellers. The horse that started this conversation was junk, I just thought I could put some time in on him and resell him for a profit. The girl probably did me a favor by accusing me of being insulting. 6 months from now when she's still paying for board, feed, vet care and shoeing, she's gonna be kicking herself for not taking $800.

All ya gotta say is " thats way too much, you're gonna have to do better then that" 9 times outta 10 they will come down, you may ask why?

Because 9 out of 10 have their stuff priced too high!

Its a no brainer for me. I know you don't like the game, but its being played on you anyway 9 times out of 10.

If I were buying from a professional or hobby horse trader... or from a horse sale, then I'd probably dicker. For them, it is about money. In Cyn's case, it seemed inappropriate, I was buying from the place that raised her and they weren't selling because they were in the business, they were selling because their daughter no longer used her. If we put more miles of experience on her, and improved her ground manners, she could be worth a little more, but not much less, as long as she stays sound.

When we sold our land and moved into the city we had to sell off our horses, too, and going through similar experiences like what you all have described in the past, we elected to do the easy thing and just give them away to a good home. We simple put them in the back of the pickup truck with a sign that said "free to good home". Man, I'm telling you, they went like hotcakes. Wait... maybe I'm thinking about kittens here, not horses.

Nevermind.

Very good post tuffy.

From the further info you've given, I wouldn't give $800 for him. He is the type of horse that needs to go (cheaply) to a very experienced trainer or the killers, IMO.

go easy on me, Mack

No Way!!! :)

I made an offer on a property here for $350,000.00 they were asking $375,000.00, the lady was "insulted" LOL...well after I walked she changed her tune and accepted my offer, and even signed a contract but later backed out of it, she was 87 and said she thought the realitor was paying the commission fee, about $21,000.00, my lawyer said it was a 50/50 case in the courts, so I walked again.

Well about 3 months later the old gal told the Realtor to tell that "boy" she would take my offer, I told her NO WAY. :)

That was almost a year ago and the property is still for sale, I ran into the Realtor the other day and told her to make the old gal another offer, $250,000.00 :) I'm sure she will howl, but the ball is in my court now. :) NEVER give in easy, you leave too much money on the table.

ONe time when I was giving puppies away, I had a vet scold me for that:). The point he made was very good tho.

Sell them, even if it's just a little. People tend to take better care of things they have to pay for. The more they pay the better the care they give it. Maybe true maybe not. But that is one reason I would ask more for my horses. I'll negotiate some, but I'm sure my prices are still more then they are realistically worth:), but that's my prerogative
