*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

They are really good coyote hunters! I have one for that reason, Charlee, the jenny in the picture on the who's who page. Llamas are good for that, too.

My dogs had to learn to stay away from Charlee, she doesn't discriminate.

Personally, I wouldn't buy that horse for $1500 unless I knew it was problems I could fix.

Has the horse been trained in any specific discipline, or is he just broke with no special training?

No special training. I think he's off the track.

$800 was my final offer. Just because she's lost a ton of money on the horse doesn't mean I'm going to. Also, this horse is over 10 years old which raises another red flag. If he was a decent horse he'd have more training. In her ad she says, "my trainer thinks he would make a great hunter/jumper". Something's fishy.

Morning. 10 minutes and I have to get out of here. I finally found something that makes DH happy. Seeing me get out of bed at 6:30 every morning:') Grrr, it's early.
She shouldn't be insulted. She should have just counter offered until she got to "firm".

Like Becky said, she stated "make me an offer!" in her ad.

I wonder why she didn't counter offer? That would have been what most people would do, who are trying to sell something.

How's the new job? Did you have a good day yesterday?

I agree. Don't say make me an offer if you aren't interested in negotiating.

I'm in orientation for a month. I'll be more comfortable when I get a routine but I'm excited about it. Getting used to 8-5 going to be the hardest part I think :') Gotta go. Yall all have a good day.

Donkeys are great protection from them, they hate coyotes and will kill them in a heartbeat.
However, I think your suggestion of moving the RV closer and camping until the problem is erradicated is a good one. I wouldnt put my gun away until that was done. They are scavengers in the worst possible sense and are pests that need to be gone.
You certainly dont want to find your dog/horse/or new foal wounded or worse. Its bad enough losing chickens.
Good luck Becky!

I dunno, Tuffy, I have to agree with Cowboy on this one. 800 is way too low. I think that the lowest I would go is 1500.
For all we know, the reason he could be for sale for so long is that he's unsound. (And if that's the case, I wouldn't look at him) It sounds like it's more the owner's fault than the horse's fault. But who knows, you really can't know until you look at him. :-)

I just don't understand that thinking. This is a horse that's going to need a ton of work

Whoa thar, easy girl. I didn't say that you insulted the horse. I said that you insulted the lady. I'm sure that if you say the horse is a bag of soap bones, then he is.

And personally, I wouldn't give the change in my pocket for a TB if it won the Kentucky Derby. No insult intended.

When in similar situations where I'm interested in something that I've determined to be way over priced, I usually just walk away without making an offer. Something that is a piece of crap and over priced to boot, should say it all.

"Do you know that If we actually do kill it, does hanging them on the fence keep others away?"

Not sure about coyotes but I'm definitely not coming around!

I've been in the horse business for 35 years and I know how to read between the lines. The buyer is never the liar, only the seller. She may not be outright lying but she's definitely leaving things out. The girl is too afraid to ride this horse, she says she doesn't "think" he's dangerous, he's stubborn, he has no specific training, other than just being broke to ride. He's been for sale for months and nobody wants him. I asked her if he bucked, ran off or reared and she said no, except he's only reared one time and it was just a little one.

$800 was a generous offer and she should have taken it. I don't care how much money she has tied up in that horse. Horses are a money pit and everybody loses money on horses. I had about $12,000 tied up in Juma and sold him for a fraction of that. Just because I was stupid in the amount of money I tied up in him doesn't mean I get to pass that stupidity off on someone else.
