*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

No, but I read the book.

And cried a lot, and I didn't even own a dog at the time.

Wolf, coyote, dingo... what's the difference? Point is that you may have a mad dog-like creature roaming around.

Well, we are going to set up to shoot it.

But would it have left like it did if it was a "mad" dog?

I'm thinking it left because it thought the other one had a chicken. The one Grizzly showed up with a few minutes later??

Yes, also, to where we have our RV now we could leave it and be in perfect position. (If I can find an extension cord long enough so we can get heat out there:)

Do you know that If we actually do kill it, does hanging them on the fence keep others away?

I'm like Hair in a way, I hate killing one. Their just doing what they do, especially since I have the chickens, I almost feel like I'm baiting them, but with them getting so bold, it's rather scary. In the past I just had to step out the door and they ran off fast.

No, it doesn't keep others away. From the coyote wars here, we have one tail hanging on the chicken run gate. They still come and snatch any chicken not in the enclosure. They also come after daylight to look for the chickens that are already out in the barnyard.

We have very bold coyotes here, except ours like to eat the neighborhood cats. Take care of it as fast as you can, especially with a foal on the way. Something tells me that from this animal's behaviour, he might try to go after the foal.

Mornin' Becky. You're up early today.

Supposed to rain AGAIN here tonight. I don't remember this wet of a winter, ever!

I was looking through the online horse ads over the weekend, just to see if there was anything interesting. There is a really pretty, tall TB for sale by a woman who says she's too inexperienced for this horse. I've emailed her back and forth a couple of times and, she's not saying it outright, but it sounds like she's really scared of this horse because he's "stubborn". Reading between the lines, it sounds like he's major barn sour, something I don't mind working with and thought I could get the horse cheap, work it for a few months, then resale. She was asking $3000 but had the desperate tag, 'make me an offer!' This horse has been for sale for months so I made her a low-ball offer of $800. She told me I insulted her. I emailed her back and said "you really are inexperienced if you think any offer is insulting. And it's always a bad idea to burn bridges in the horse industry."

Did you ask her to counter offer?
If she had the make an offer line, she must be willing to come down.

That was an insult. You may as well of asked her to just give him to you.

I just don't understand that thinking. This is a horse that's going to need a ton of work, even the girls trainer doesn't want to work with him. I asked her if the horse is dangerous and she said "I wouldn't call him dangerous". I've been buying horses long enough to know that a response like that means she thinks the horse IS dangerous. He's been for sale for months so he's got a serious problem and will probably end up at the killers. $800 is about $200 over the killer price, for a horse his size.

If this was a great horse, my offer would definitely have been insulting. This is a piece of crap horse that might turn into something besides steaks with the right owner.

Good morning Becky, I have just logged on and read your problem. I am so sad to hear that it wasnt scared of your dog and I would be nervous too. We have chickens and wouldnt be without them, I dont think getting rid of the chickens would change anything.
Deconjim wonders if you can borrow a donkey? He is wondering if you have a local donkey rental place (I think he has had too much coffee!).

I don't think it was an insult. Like tuffy says the horse has problems. Your offer was low, but there is nothing wrong with trying to find out what the lowest price is she will take for him. She's playing the game with "or make an offer" nothing wrong with playing back:) Her offer, and the statements she's made about the horse, sounds to me insulting, and possibly not quite honest when she won't get specific about what the problems are.

If that horse doesn't sell for another 6 months, how much has she paid in boarding fees and shoeing for a horse that, realistically, is only worth about $1500? Sometimes, you have to admit you made a mistake and take your losses before you lose even more.
