*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - thread ONE
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

Yeah, I always thought that if you feed a good quality feed, they didn't need much suplementation. Now if they were just out on pasture I'd think you'd have to supplement quite a bit. That website said something about having the vet run a blood test to see if you need to add any supplements. I might look into that, just out of curiosity.

As for the climate down here, Lord knows they do sweat alot. The humidity is so bad that it doesn't help much either. Most days I have to wait until almost sundown to feed because it's just too darned hot otherwise and they'll be wringing wet just standing around. Ah, the joys of living in the South. But at least I don't have to worry about freezing my butt off for 8 months out of the year. You win some, you loose some.

Hmmm, that's a good idea. Never thought of that. Thanks!

Hey I saw on the HH, that you watched Gone With The Wind last night, and were asked what you thought. I haven't seen your reply yet, and am curious:)

It's one of my all time favorites.

AND to keep this on topic:), you may not have noticed since it was your first time, (I've seen it dozens and dozens), but did you notice, close at the beginning when Scarlett is out waiting for her father to come home from the Wilkes, the way his horse jumped that fence!! It really looked odd. I've watched that over and over, and just can't figure out how he made it over. It was like straight up and straight down. Must have been a horrible jolt when he landed.

I have to admit not watching it very closely, I was distracted, but I did see the part with the man leading the pony over the jump, and the later part when the girl died. I don't think we saw the beginning.

The vet told me that one of two things will happen, if they don't need it you'll find alot on the bottom of the bucket, or they will just pee it out. It won't hurt them.

I was wanting to give it to Rusty as a help to all his problems. But he is so picky, he left half the feed too to keep from eating the minerals. The other horses all liked it. Right now Rocky has a mineral block, because I thought last year he may have some type of deficency because he kept getting cramps in his hindquarters. He licks it some everyday. Once I start riding him again, we'll see if the cramps return.

I think there is a feeling that continuous farming is depleting a lot of soils of essential nutrients, and I even have a few friends who argue our own food isn't as nutritious as it used to be, and that supplemental minerals aren't as well absorbed as 'natural' minerals would be. So, it would depend on the nutrient level in the soils where our hay and grains are grown. You never know.... if pasture is relatively new in the great life cycle of uses, it may be less depleted than ground where it's been grazed or farmed for years. ~shrugs~ I don't know how we get around it.

Oh...well it's a real odd looking jump.

You know, it's one of those movies that I think if you've read the book you will enjoy the movie more. The movie followed the book pretty good, but you get alot more insight into why some of the people are they way they are. I've know people who have only seen the movie and thought Scarlett was a real bitch. And in one sense she was, but it was more that she was spoiled then a bitch. IMO, she really didn't have much choice in doing the things she did. Some people are just called on to do the hard stuff, that is going to make them hated by the rest of the world. The fact that they go ahead and do it deserves them some credit.

My vet's wife talks about supplements like that... She ponders just like we do whether some of the supplements really do any good... "It might do some good, it might just be expensive pee" ;~D

the way his horse jumped that fence!!... It was like straight up and straight down....

I remember reading something about that. That's the way the cavalry used to teach their horses to jump. They'd keep their head up real high and make them jump like a rabbit. It wasn't until later that they figured out that that wasn't the most efficient way to do it.

Speaking of great movies, have either of you ever seen Tom Selleck in Monty Walsh? It's a TNT movie, but it's really good. It's about a die hard cowboy and his struggle to adapt (or not) to the changes in the West in the early part of this century. The last scene in the movie is great. He jumps his horse over the top of a "tin lizzie" that the local "fancy pants" town mayor and his wife have gotten stuck in the mud. I LOVED it!

I'll try it again.... not paying very much attention, I didn't really understand all the drama of the end.

Of course.... my southernor friends think that sortof embodies 'the trouble with yankees'. We don't pay much attention to it and we just don't get it. That's why I brought it up in the HH.... 'cuz I don't get it. ;~D

I think I've seen that....does he have a girl friend in town.

Oh, and thanks for the info on that jump. Strangest thing I've ever seen. And you described it exactly.

Uh, this IS the early part of THIS century...Should've said the early part of LAST century....I can't get used to that yet.

"Frankly Scarlett, I don't GIVE a Damn!" Greatest lines ever uttered in a movie!

And if you thought THAT was drama, just read the sequel, Scarlett. That was a good one too.

LOL...I've wondered what people from the "north" thought of it. I've never really discussed it with any. What don't you get?

I mostly like it for seeing the clothes, and the houses and the habits of the people of the times. Wondered how true alot of that is.

I've read other novels about the times. And you can get an entirely different point of view, so who really knows. Probably a bit of both is the truth. I'm sure there were slave owners who weren't tyrants, and then those that were.

REally??? You liked the sequal. Actually as a sequal to GWTW, I thought it sucked. As just a romance novel I thought it was OK.

I thought the author of the sequal treated the characters like she hadn't read the book, but only seen the movie. Not alot of depth into their phycic's:)

Until the sequal came out, did you think Scarlett ever got Rhett back? That was always the big talking point till the sequal answered it.

Yes, sorta. She's a prostitute, but one of the "good as gold" kind. He apparently had a long term relationship with her but never would marry because he thought she deserved a better life than he could give her. I LOVE Tom Selleck's cowboy movies. That man could hang his hat up at my place ANYTIME. ;o)

(if I wasn't married).

Yeah, that's the movie I've seen before. It was good.

I've always liked Tom Selleck and actually thought he should play Rhett when they made the sequel:)

You got a point there. It really was about a totally different subject. But I liked it as a romance novel.
