*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I've always thought Feb. was the hardest month to get thru.
The times it's hailed here, my horses will stand out in it, except Rocky, I've always figured it was the noise. They have pretty tough hides, so it probably doesn't hurt as bad as we think it does,,,,at least that's what I tell myself:)

Oh Man! RoS has had a run of bad luck. Did she hurt her arm when she tripped over the cat running out to the barn when Thunder was born? I remember her telling us about that and we all got a big laugh out of it, but she didn't say anything about hurting herself. You're gonna have to put some running lights on your cats so she can see them. ;o)
Did they put a cast on her arm and foot?
Yeah, what else can you do. I had them tied in the barn when it started (It's a cow barn so I don't have any stalls) and you've never seen the like of eye-rolling and snorting. They were running around on the ends of their leads like fish on a hook. I liked to have never got them to stand still long enough to get their halters off to turn them loose, and when I did, well, nobody'd better be in the way. I turned Blade loose last and about the time I took his halter off there was this FLASH/BANG of lightning/thunder that was so close I just knew we were toast and he scratched off so hard that he absolutely covered me from head to toe in dirt. It was just a little bit scary.
Mine will run out of the lean-to also if it's hailing, because of the noise. They're OK inside the stalls, It's a little quieter in there because it's lined.
I think mostly, because they are trapped in there, they've learned the noise doesn't kill them because they've had to endure it, it eventually stopped, and they didn't die. If they can come and go freely, and they run out when the hail starts, they think running out is what saved them ;~D
Our hail is never very bad, pea sized is as big as we get, and they run under the trees where they are probably just as well off.
Hey Cindy.... Roll call! Been wondering where you are. You OK?
I've seen pet doors in catalogs where the pet wears a special collar and the door will only open for that pet. I'll bet you can get multiple collars for them too. They're a little pricey though.
Someone mentioned a horsey door....Here's a picture of mine...
I was working with Hope on her trailer loading and left the feed room door open and Miss Grace just walked in and helped herself to the cat's food and water. She didn't want to get out either, the big goof.
Here's Hope teaching herself to trailer load...
Have you got dinner in the trailer there? ;~D
I don't have critters in the yard like possums or raccoons because of the dogs, I think.... never seen one.
Wow, that's a bad coulpe of weeks. Tell to get well soon.(o:
Hi mamma.
No sun for a week, is it suppose to rain any?)o: Please say no.
I started off getting in there first with a pocket full of feed to sweeten the deal until they get the idea that's there's treats to be had in the trailer. At one point, I was trying to keep 3 other horses out so Hope could get in. In this picture, she was just checking it out by herself. After she got in, I got in there with her and gave her her "payment". I didn't want to have the feed in there first because they get wise to it and won't get in there you don't "show me the money" first.
Well, she's doint real well then. She'll be easy to load.
You need to stop worrying about the weather, suck it up you big baby.
BigMack
Rain tomorrow pretty certain. After that small chances. Just no sun.
I think I'm going to cook lasagna Thurs night and Charlie and Kristy are coming too. We'll save a piece for Travis.
Becky
Mmmmmmmm, Lasagne. Can I come too? ;o)
Sure:)

Health/Husbandry/MO - Trace Elements
I use a salt and mineral block that I believe contains all these trace elements.
I've used the mineral blocks before but they don't seem to eat it as well as the white blocks but maybe I should change back. I've also heard the argument that you should use loose salt as opposed to a block because they can make their tongue sore from licking before they get the level of salt they need. Mine usually end up biting the block and that wears their teeth down. I've tried the loose mineral salt before, but it sure is messy. They usually end up turning over the pan that it's in and wasting most of it. Maybe if I put it in a bucket mounted on the wall it would work better.
I think with the mineral blocks, they really don't need a lot. They really ~shouldn't~ have so much at one time. I've seen horses who have been a long time without one lick it compulsively for a day or two, and then not so often, as if they actually have an inner gauge that tells them they are low, and when they don't need it any more.
Perhaps in your hot hot climate where they sweat more, provide both plain salt and a mineral block.
I've used that mineral powder before. My vet said to just top dress their feed with it, about 2 ounces a day.
