*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

No baby yet, although I was up every hour last night checking the camera. I think Bob's just anxious to see this foal. She'll foal in the afternoon I think, not at night. She wants to make sure we are with her.

:) I'd sure prefer it. Be even nicer if we has some sun come out, but there are heat lights in the barn. Have fun today building fires.

I will, if I do... right now it's in the lower 20's. We won't have the sun up high enough over the trees till about noon :~D

Do you have any newspapers, or any dry wood at all that you can use for kindling? My dad taught me how to build a proper fire when I was a kid. I once beat out two former eagle scouts in getting a fire started. They were not to happy at being "shown up" :-)
Yesterday I rode, and had a really good ride. Next week I'm going on a trail ride.

Yeah - we have lots of waste paper.... We collect and burn all our paper garbage.

Just waiting for it to warm up a little outside!

Nice pile of sticks. I would have a slight pyromaniacal conundrum in what to do. Do I:

1) Light em all off at once and have a roaring blaze for a little while, or

2) Start a little fire and feed it for a long time

If it's a nice night, I'd be leaning towards option 2. Would probable have to ice down a few beers and get my banjo out.

Drink one for me. :~)

Did you get your sticks burned.

It stayed cold and windy here today. Seems to be getting colder too, now.

I was/am hoping starting Mon. it warms up enough to work horses. I have to get started no matter the weather. I'd look more forward to it if it was warmer:)

We didn't get ~anything~ done. It just feels really bonechilling cold out. ecurbh went to town and got some new movies. :~D

And I am having an exercise issue... I went out for a power walk yesterday and cramped up instantly. I've been having back cramps doing things as simple as cleaning stalls, but it didn't occur to me till the all over body cramp yesterday that it's potassium. This happened to me the last time I tried to get in shape, someone told me the muscle cramps were potassium deficiency, I didn't really believe it till I had a banana and I was fine the next day! :~D

So ecurbh went and got me a multivitamin with potassium and some bananas.

I wonder if that's my problem. Since I'm at "that" age, I figured I was calcium deficient. I don't really cramp, just leg aches alot, and lower back. But calcium pills made me nauseous.

The joys of getting old:).

It might be, if they ache as soon as you exert yourself.

With me, it made a huge difference. I went to walk 'briskly' around the pasture, and it hurt less than a quarter way around. By one time around I hurt all the way from my legs all the way up my back. Last time, as soon as I got my Potassium level up, I went 4-5 times around briskly before I got fatigued, not cramped.

We have a circle drive that comes in from the road, curves around the house and goes back out to the road on the other side. 6 times around equals a mile. I use to walk that for excersie. The dogs are the ones that thought I was nuts:)

I tried to estimate our pasture perimeter so I could tell how far I was walking... I couldn't ever figure it out, though I thought I should be able to through some kind of conversion. It's roughly square, and about 3 acres in area.

No problem. Just to help you out:

There are 43,560 square feet in an acre, right? so, multiply that by three and you get 130680 sqare ft.
Take the square root of that and you get 361.5 feet on a side, Multiply that by 4, and you get: 1445.9 ft, or 1446 feet. for the perimeter.
There are 5,280 feet in a mile, right? So divide 1446 ft by 5,280 feet, and you get .273 miles every time you go around. So, if you go around 4 times, you'll get 1.1 miles.
