*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - thread ONE
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

I don't know about where yall are at but my local library sells used books. I pick up paperbacks from 25-50 cents. Hard copies are a little more.

I just don't do both. If I read a book I don't watch the movie and visa versa. It's like "no, no. That's not right:')

Oh but it's so impressive to watch a good reining horse - they are beyond belief, like a good cutting horse. :)

A good many of her books are series type (complete story but same characters) usually in groups of three. Shadows; Evil; etc. You'll enjoy reading the series in order.

Maybe I misunderstood. I saw reins out of my hands and a horse spinning under me:')

RoS gets her books by the boxfull, but I'm not sure where she gets them. She has very little time to read, but she's the fasted reader I've ever known, so she still goes through them pretty fast.

I bought a nice sorrel mare at an auction. A few days later she turned up lame. We went back to the auction the next week to see the seller. He was not there, but a few days later showed up at the house at 2 A.M. with this horse on the truck. She had her head tied the other way, and with only a flash light, we could not really see what she was like. He hauled her out to my grandfather's farm, where I kept my horse. Needless to say, we were shocked the next day, when we saw what he brought us. Her whole right side of her face hung down. I don't know if the jaw had been broke, or what had caused such an injury.

The picture was taken as evidence and we did get our money back. I did ride her, and she was broke to death. Too bad.

Yeah I buy them buy the bag. I limit my reading until I have a few hours free though because once I start a book, I have to finish it.

I love to read, but rarely have the time anymore. I never read fiction, though. That's a rule I learned from Gen. Robert E. Lee, who would never let any of his kids read fiction. He figured that, if they were going to read, they might as well be learning something at the same time. I did't really agree with that at the time, but since then, fiction hasn't been able to hold my attention.

Like Duchess said... right behind the withers, and right above the dock of the tail, are very calming places to rub them. they groom each other there... and momma horse will comfort baby there.

Oh yeah. I like this one too. I'm learning neck reining. When something would go wrong I tended to drop the right rein and grab the saddle and then try to get the rein back and would lose my seat. I also wanted to hold my arms up to steer. My trainer, these last few months has had me holding with my left hand. Sometimes when my horse gets stubborn with turning I take up the rein with my right hand though. I thought I would feel less secure but actually it's been right the opposite.

I'm not sure I understand, did you buy a different horse, or was this horse injured after you bought her but before they delivered?

Poor thing. Do you know what happened to her when you sent her back?

One more question if you don't mind. When you are working with things that spook should you introduce it slowly or just do it. Like the cup I kicked. Should I have showed it to her first and kicked it further away from her. I had no idea myself it was going to be so loud .

There's a fine line between introducing and settling them to things that might spook them, and just scaring them with unusual scary things for the sake of spooking them while tied. Tying them up and kicking a can around them seems more like the second that the first to me.

IMHO, the purpose of training is not to get them to never be startled at anything by purposely startling them all the time... I think that will make them crazy and nervous, just like you would become perpectually rattled if someone went around jumping up and yelling "BOO" at you all the time. The purpose of training is to get them to trust YOU when if/when they do become startled, and keep their composure if you tell them, through words and hands, that they should not be afraid.

There is a time for sacking out and desensitizing... but it's easy to cross the line into just harrassing them. I'm not saying what you did is wrong... I just get a sense that you think they should reach a point where they are never startled by something wacky going on... And I'm not sure if that's overdone, if you are going to make them duller, or perpetually on guard.
