*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

Since it looks to be a relatively slow day here again, I'm off to the bookstore to find Outlander, and Kay Hooper books, and a new copy of Watchers.

Yes I did:). The problem with me is, I can't look at places that big anymore without thinking of all the work that goes into the upkeep of something like that.

I don't mind work, but I'm at the age, I want to do as little as possible:) 5 acres, and 4 horses is almost more then I can handle now.

Well it depends on what it is and where the horse is :)

We usually start a little slower but hey - it worked. You just have to keep in the back of your mind, will the horse be safe if it spooks badly - in other words, is the area clear, is there room, etc.

This was just sent to me and I wanted to share it :)

Our lives with horses are rich with feeling. You know this if you've ever...

.. choked back tears watching a new foal wobble to his feet for the First time

...or watched your good horse wobble to his feet after surgery...

... or seen the ends of the reins float straight out as a reining horse spins beneath them

. . or chuckled to yourself as you watched a tiny tot on a patient pony trot through a barrel pattern at a saddle club payday

... or felt the building tremble as an eight-up hitch of feather-legged giants towed a hand-carved beer wagon into the arena

... or had your heart stop when you saw your horse lying motionless in the pasture on a sunny day and waited breathlessly for an ear to flick

... or cheered at the screen when "The Man From Snowy River" slid Dennie down the mountainside,

.. or when Seabiscuit made his final surge to beat War Admiral

... or cruised along the highway and seen a horse in a pasture and wondered what he's like to ride or pictured him as a prospect

... or sucked in your breath as a horse and rider approached a six-foot wall

... or sworn a solemn oath to your horse that together you would triumph

... or flipped through the TV channels and stopped when you saw a horse even when it was a commercial

... or laughed aloud when you rubbed your horse's face and he rubbed back

... or gotten chills hearing Dave Johnson's "and DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME!" (or "Run for the Roses" circa 1980 ish?)

... or stood in awe at your horse in morning play as he sprinted around the pasture, then stopped, head erect, and snorted defiance at the rest of the world

... or been thankful to see wild horses grazing casually at the foot of a hill

... or felt calmed by the sleekness of a silky haircoat beneath your hand

... or felt your jaw drop as you watched a Lipazzan perform a capriole

... or if you've ever seen someone in the grocery store wearing a certain kind of hat, or boots, or buckle, or have a certain cut and length to their jeans, and felt some remote kind ofconnection

... or felt warmed by a soft nicker greeting as you entered the barn

... or slid your hand under your horse's blanket to straighten it out, only to pause in the glowing feeling that you get when you touch the warmth of his coat.

... or riding on a trail with your horse, thinking how that trail over there looks nice and almost without asking, your horse has sensed your slightest movement in the saddle and he's now taking you there.

... or pulled up to your barn where you board and only your horse greets you with a welcoming hello from the sound of your car or your voice.

... if you've ever been moved by any of these feelings, I hope you enjoyed the time you spent reading this. If you choose, please forward this to your horse friends.

The only stephen king book that I really took a liking to was Bag of Bones.

I've never really dealt with horses that broke their jaws, but I did come across a horse off the track who had several broken teeth because they knocked him about quite a bit. That horse needed to be put in a strait jacket when we got him....

I've got that one but haven't read it yet. I'm bad to do that. I just can't wait for a book to come out in paperback so I'll buy it in hardback at some godawful price, then don't read it for years. Duh!

I've enjoyed the Gunslinger series. They're a little weird, but then so am I.

The Green Mile was my all time favorite of his. The movie was good, but the book was great.

I haven't read alot of King, I've never read Bag of Bones.

One summer, I was reading alot of his right in a row. A book of his short stories, Pet Semetary, Firestarter, and the last one that summer was Christine. Funnily enough, maybe because I had read so much in a row Christine stuck with me the most and gave me a few sleepless nights.

I did like Pet Semetary, I felt you really got to like the characters.

I'm back from town. Our little used book store is closed down:(. Doesn't surprise me really.

I went on into Tulsa to Barnes and Noble. I found Outlander, and Kay Hooper books (which is a good one to start with....so many), and I got a new copy of Watchers and Lightening.

I found it interesting, in these new copies, they contain Afterwords by the author. He said Watchers is his favorite (maybe he isn't as "far out there" as I thought:), In the afterword of Lightening, he said his publisher didn't want him to publish it at that time, right after Watchers. His main objection to it "it doesn't have a dog in it:)".

I'm probably going to start with Watchers, been several years since I read it.

Good! Sounds like you got quite a haul. Let me know when you've read Outlander and what you thought of it. I think you'll like it.

One word of warning:

If you are really going to read the book, DO NOT watch the movie Watchers, that is based on this book. It is NOTHING like the book. If I had been Koontz I'd have thrown a fit over such butchery to his work. It will ruin the book if you watch the movie first.

I didn't even know they'd made a movie of The Watchers. I knew they did Intensity and I didn't even bother to watch it coz I knew there was no way it could be as good as the book. It was another really creepy murderer type book. You've got to wonder about somebody that can come up with that many twisted characters and plots.

Most movies based on books are very disappointing. The Horse Whisperer movie didn't end ANYTHING like the book.
