*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
The man that owns/operates our feed store is very independent. He has us all trained well:) He doesn't open till8:30 and closes at 5. IMO, he probably looses alot of business because of that. Most people around here work in Tulsa. He's not open when they go past in the morning and is closed before alot of them come back by in the evening. And he's only open till 11:30 on Sat, closed Sun.
Becky
They really look good:) They're so fill out.
Becky
Thanks, they are doing so great, Adge tucks into the feed and hay right alongside Misty, he still has milk but has quite a lot of hay and grain too, Thunder is still only nibbling at the grain and hay but he is happy with just his Mom for now. They are doing great in the middle field with just the round pen fencing between them.
Sugar is doing good too, her "tire" has gone down a lot, like the vet said.
I haven't watched a football game since the mid 80's, and then it was only one. I don't have time to watch, nor do I have interest in games. To me, sports is hunting and fishing, and I never have time to do either of those.
The secret to hay handling is to buy and feed your horses large round bales of good quality hay. No more square bales, they are too expensive and just too much hard work.
The "Full Moon Ensemble" was just too good to let pass by......
We can't move round bales around, for one.. no tractor ;~D
And it's too wet here in winter to leave hay out, it'd spoil.
and there aren't good quality round bales here, it's rarely warm enough for them to be well cured, and they rot in the middle (or burst into flames)
Only round bales here are silage for cattle...
Argh! Have you two considered moving to the heartland.....
Not just for the hay ;~D
I love it up here.
If there are enough people in your area to make it cost effective, there could be another solution. I have a friend that builds and sells a round bale unroller, which can then feed the hay into a square baler. I have no idea what they cost, but he sells them all over the country. I've watched them run and they work quite well.
Hmmm.... seems like more work than just buyin square bales ;~D
~thinkis this is Becky's cue to say "So why are you fools buying hay in the first place?"~
Guess you are stuck with square bales then. On a good hot dry summer's day here you can cut, condition, rake and bale hay in one day. Without a conditioner, it takes two to three days to dry. Normally, We will leave round bales outside for a couple of weeks to cure (go through a heat) before putting them inside the barn. still it is best to manually check them just to make sure. They can get quite warm while curing.
By conditioning do you mean 'tetting'?
Speaking of TV - I am having a ball watching a Little House on the Prairie marathone. I just love LHOP. :~D
:) Read Kay Hooper
Oh, wearing a kilt is not a poofy thing to do at all. :-) I absolutely love celtic music. I play a variety of whistles, and the concert and irish flutes, and dabble in native american flute too. That's a good picture of your friend.
Gorgeous foals you got there! Adge looks like he's starting the shed out around the nose... and will be pretty much the same color as his baby coat, if a tad darker. I expect Thunder will do the same.
