I swear, the only time I can think of off the top of my head where this was an issue...where Matthew was behaving badly under the authority of someone beside myself...was in Sunday school when he was six years old. His teacher took me aside when I came to pick him up and told me she had to seperate him from the rest of the kids because he was being disruptive during the lesson.
Oh Hair...it was awful...for Matthew, I must say. He got in such bad trouble that he is reminded of it to this day. He got a spanking, he got grounded, and he had to write a handwritten note of apology to the teacher...difficult for him because he had pretty bad fine motor skills at that time.
But he never forgot it and it never has happened again, not in Sunday school, or co-op, or choir or Awanas or anything else I put him in where he is under the authority of someone else.
The teacher doesn't need to do anything but report to me. This particular teacher was absolutely mortified that we'd even made him apologize! But she is well aware to this day that he's never given anyone else any trouble since. (She was Joshua's spanish teacher in co-op...she's known our family for a while.)
HA HA!!
--->just appalled!
That's why it depends on the situation. Those folks have no business dealing with children.
Rosie, I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. A higher quality cat food would be good and you may want to consider a supplement that increases your cat's auto-immune system. I have had Louise (our 15 1/2 yo cat) on "Life Exxtension" for about a year, and her blood work this year was much better than it was last year. It improved her attitude and general interest in her surroundings.
Life Exxtension is put out by Solid Gold, a manufacturer of holistic pet foods and products.
It is expensive but you only use 1/4 teaspoon/day, so it will last a long time. It is sold at health food stores that sell pet products so it would probably be easier to find after you relocate.
Corin doesn't get spanked. He never misbehaves.
Believe it or not, I never got spanked in school. Probably more that I never got caught than that I didn't deserve it.
I got paddled with a board...and I guess I probably deserved it. I got in fight with a guy that cut in front of me in the lunch line when I was oh, maybe eight years old? Maybe nine?
We were pretty good friends when we graduated.
Why do I have this image of a roomful of old people in gold lamé surrounded by dozens of cats???
I was hungry.
What I think it important about that situation is that you backed up the teacher who had made the judgment call about disciplining him. I know I was further punished when my parents found out I had misbehaved in someone else's care. And I KNEW my parents would side with the teacher, no question about it and if they ever didn't I never knew. I think when discipline falls apart is when parents defend and become a barrier between the child and the teacher/instructor/coach, etc. Kids learn to take advantage of that in a hurry.
I got involved in a thread awhile back where I argued that a parent who was siding with the child against the school was making a mistake in letting the child know that. (I think it was a knife brought to school or something, and the kid was suspended). I think unless there is very good reason, the parent and the instructor should be a united front as far as the kid knows.
I got swats in school, too :-)
Funny thing is, I can't imagine you misbehaving, unless it's with a smart aleck remark.... was that it?
Sometimes. I also have a lazy streak broad as a board. And occasionally we'd get the "if nobody's going to admit who did X, you'll all get it".
Oh, I'm really a very bad person. Was quite rebellious, in my way, as a kid. But I didn't really get many spankings after I was 8 or so. The problem was, sending me to my room was a completely ineffective punishment because I liked to be there. They had to define it down to "go to your room, sit on your bed, and do not read". That was an actual punishment.
She'd try!
Thanks for the tips! Does your kitty LIKE the Life Exxtension stuff, or do you have to force-feed it?
This is the YOUNGEST of my cats...hence it's thrown me totally for a loop. And she isn't diagnosed yet...as of now it's just a "maybe this is why..." diagnosis. They have to do further tests. *sigh*
On the bright side, the test isn't as expensive as I thought. I called to ask. A blood test is more, so maybe it's just as well she didn't let 'em do it...
Yes indeed...
And really, the situation is completely hypothetical, because I don't put the boys in situations where the person in authority would hit them and I monitor their classes and their teachers aren't the grumpy types...they like what they're doing, I guess!
However, I did have one situation with a Sunday school teacher, where I took Joshua out of her class (he was just a toddler) because he was crying all the time. This was the extended part of the class that went on during worship, after regular Sunday school, you know...I just told her "I'll keep him with me in worship" and she replied "You're going to have a whiney little boy if you give in to him!" I said "Whatever, you old hag" (in my mind) and just took off with him to worship!
Got to worship, old women scowling at me carrying this baby in and all, sat down and he went promptly to sleep in my arms. Come to find out the reason he was crying was only because he was sleepy! I took him to worship every time after that and he would just sleep so peacefully the whole time.
It's an extreme, I know.
Hey, I didn't have to stand up and down during the service because of it! I'd just sit there with Joshua sleeping like an angel in my arms. I did it till he grew out of the nap and then he just sat in worship with the rest of us.
Then I'll take her! :~D
Louise loves it, and lets me know if I happen to forget to put it in her food!! Annie, the 5 yo cat, likes it too, and tries to sneak any food Louise doesn't get to during "first breakfast."
I can't wait to meet your children! Shootmoot is gonna be a blast with all these kids! Totally different from the WeddingMoot!
Halvah isn't quite five.
I still think maybe this is all a big mistake. I mean...what I'm reading is that this generally affects old cats, and mostly males.
Maybe this is just a result of all the eye problems she's had. The cataracts, I mean. And maybe I just THINK she drinks a lot, since I'm comparing her with Tam who's too busy when I'm around to eat or drink...he does that when I'm not available to play. ;-)
