Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Tomorrow we may come this way...
New verse:
|
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

The website says 12.5lbs with battery ... the one I spec'ed out would go over 15lbs easy.

Yah.
I'm not sure but I think the low-profile Dell 4700c series desktops are lighter. I'd bet money on it. :-)

Now imagine this raging hurricane of a computer...
"upgraded" to run windows ME instead of the OEM XP Pro.
It is so wrong.
It's like getting that Ferrari Daytona and insisting on "upgrading" the engine to MOPAR. [sigh]

Don't think so (not paying ~full~ attention). They did show the Polar Sea, though.

Bastiges. It's always the stinkin' star that gets the photo ops. That's 'cuz its spent most of its useful life in the yards. Easy to locate. :-)

I've given up tryin' to like Entourage. Maybe I'm just cynical in my old age, though. We're a 100% Wintel shop, but some doctor calls me on midnights every few months, and complains that Entourage still isn't working on his Mac notebook at home. His personal computer consultant gives him a list of questions to ask us, which we answer. Entourage is still not working, so he blames us.
Got another doctor last night, calling from home. He needs to un-block pop-ups for our site long enought to install some of our unsigned ActiveX. Runs Windows XP, and gets the message "pop-up blocked". He insists that he really does have pop-ups unblocked, and denies that the message means what it means. He blames us for how his home PC is working.
While all of this is going on, he gives me the worst bad-mouthing of our computer systems, worse than even I do. Then he said he expected to be called back tonight at a certain time, with the solution.
I'm surprised he still hasn't called me back, demanding his answer. But the night is still young.

I love the emails we get all the time from grad students... "I need a faster machine"... "give me a new box".... like we have all these great boxes waiting to be asked for. New machine, or pay your salary? Hmm, decisions, decisionsI get calls like that all the time, from non-doctors. However, some folks are noticing that they still have 800MHz Dells with 128MB of RAM, while other departments have been upgraded two or three times in the same timeframe. Current hot ride is the Dell Optiplex SX280. It is so "leet" that I didn't know we were deploying them until a doctor called, and said all the 280s were being installed upside down, making it impossible to put a CD in the tray.

Yeagh...gots a polar sea out my window. A bleak, blank, blah expanse of snow, snirt, ice- and frost-encrusted dead things that, if we can hold out for another month, might turn out to be trees.
This time of year fills me with such hope and joy...
< /sarcastic whinging>
Anyway...Good Morning!

...One of the truths of life does remain: Novell's NDS as a directory service really was well ahead of its time. Windows Active Directory (and they'll even admit it after a couple of beers) is a total ripoff of NDS.Ya know, that post was pretty much word for word how my boss explained things in his network class. ;-)
As mainly just a PC support puke, I don't do a WHOLE lot with Active Directory...but I like. I really like.
