Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Tomorrow we may come this way...
New verse:
|
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I really, really like Outlook 2003. We've been running it on IT's machines for quite awhile, and have it on about half the clients now.
Of course...the users either want new software last year or they don't EVER want it. So I have no clear picture on whether or not they really care much for it.

Gotta wonder about an OS with so many daemons runnin' around...

Heh heh... I jumped from Windows 3.1 to Unix, and didn't return to Windows until Win98. I still talk about "mounting" drives instead of "mapping" them....

That guy has been like that for years now.
I do have to admit that we did *finally* convince him, only in the last few months, to go with XP on his new laptop. So... now any time he has trouble, he blames it on that instead.
Fortunately for him, I have enough personal perspective to see the basic raging humor in everything he says or does. Otherwise I would have been on the roof with a rifle many many moons ago.
I do have to wonder why the company puts up with him. Sure, he owns most of the stock, which is why he's chairman of the board... but still... there's gotta be a way to get out from under somebody this deranged.
Another funny one:
Late last year one of his new laptops cost $15,000. He buys a new one about once a month. In the fixed assets system, we have 65 laptops currently associated with his name. This does not include laptops that have been disposed.
Now... I'm a techie sort of person, even if my techness has been diluted by some years managing people instead of computers... but I do not even know *how* to spend $15K on a laptop. I could sit all day configuring systems and not be able to come up with that.
Staggering. Really.

Evening all...short visit tonight, methinks.
I've been seeing a strange billboard around the state lately; this one is in Lansing (on MLK just south of GM Assembly, for those who know the area).
It appears to be advertising the billboard company's services. This company ran Bush/Cheney '04 ads on its own, not paid for by the campaign.

Yeah...I'm playin' around a bit just for curiosity's sake, and even adding ungodly amounts of RAM and special features, I'm hard pressed to hit $6000, never mind well over twice that amount.
I dunno whether to be impressed or dismayed.
In either case, though, it's time for bed...

Alienware. Ever seen them? Brutally awesome machines.
I've tried to configure one and still can't get over $6k.

Are the laptops gold-plated? Voice controlled? Sheesh!
Never had to work with Netware, so my goats can be used to appease the daemons on *nix.
