The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 01/27/2005 9:59:05 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

And his heroes didn't ever really triumph. That's what I always loved about Heinlein - the heroes would face terrible adversity but at the end, they'd have won, really won, and they'd know it. Bradbury was a lot more depressing.

Sometimes reading a downer can be enjoyable.

BTW, watching the first episode of "The 4400".

OK... I'm back now. The false alarm wasn't.

Yeesh. I need a new job.

I'm sort of studying general theory. Mostly watching my bittorrent downloads, not download. Grr.... it's super software if a dozen or more people want a file. If only three people want it, it'll take days...

Wasn't an alarm, or wasn't false?

New jobs are possible...

My computer got a nasty virus after I loaded Bittorrent. Once I got the virus cleaned up I took Bittorrent off too.

Interesting. I haven't had that problem. Which client did you use? I like Azareus... the biggest problem I have is the big torrent sites have tons of spyware. I mostly go to teeny little sites listing a specific anime, so it's not too big a problem for me.

Decided to restart it. Eh... at least now it's seeing some seeds.

I dunno which client it was... just followed a link off of bittorrent.org.

Gah, I sound like a clueless user.

Bittorrent is evil. Bandwidth-sucking thing it is. Worse than Gnutella, given the chance.

Have banned it from my network. It's a bugger though... since it auto-seeks available ports. Can't just shut a port. It starts looking for 68xx something, then hunts port by port all the way up to 7000 or something. Gotta block 'em all to keep it out.

Arrrggh. :-) Bastiges.

I sometimes have dreams that I can breath under the water...then thegirl just told me she had one of those dreams too. :-)

SuziQ...you're not looking to get rid of either the Writing Strands or that Latin Primer are ya?

Had a long day...off to bed. Mrnad is already there. Goodnight.

Wasn't false. Or, rather, the false alarm was followed up shortly thereafter by a real one. Ack.

Since it doesn't serve a business purpose (it doesn't, does it?) make having it on your hard drive a firing offense. Then announce you're going to start scanning hard drives for the Bitttorent binaries. That should clear it up quick.

I'm feeling ruthless tonight.

Yup, yup... people shouldn't be using it at work. At home, it's great. If you use it for good and not evil.

Of course I keep it under control and limit it's bandwidth if I'm using the internet at the same time.

I have a blurb in the acceptable-use policy that basically says we can fire you for just about any computer use at all. :-)

But as it turns out it is plenty effective to send an email to the office director and cc'ing the user saying:

"You may have noticed a significant degradation in your Internet performance today. We've traced this to computer named _______ logged in as ______ that was attempting to use Bittorrent to download the entire current season of the TV show "Everybody loves Raymond" to their computer."

"If this was a valid business use of this system, then I will restore access to that system with my apologies. Otherwise, I would be happy to explain to the rest of your office what the problem was and what steps we have taken to deal with the issue."

"Regards,

Your ever-so-friendly IT Director".

I almost never have to follow that up. Seems those problems take care of themselves. It's been a while now. Ever since I did almost exactly that with a particular office where somebody was downloading the entire collection of "The Simpsons"...
:-)

Ooh, and downloading copyrighted material like that could put the office at some sort of liability, I'd think. Or at least the MPAA/RIAA might think so.

Some people shouldn't be given a computer. Or an etch-a-sketch, for that matter.

That ought to be a hanging offense.

Hangin' is too good fer 'em. Just let the rest of the office know why it was so tough to get through to [cough] eBay all day...

Of course, we don't ban good and useful sites like FR. :-)

Everybody loves Raymond

I don't. I think he's a whiny loser. But that's just me.

Gonna go hit the couch with my wife and watch our new Spinal Tap DVD. G'night!
