The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 01/27/2005 9:59:05 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Niters...

Just a thought, for tomorrow morning... if you really want to mess with some heads in your IT dept...

Get a Knoppix CD (they're -ahem- available). it's a bootable Linux desktop, all from a CD. Boot your computer from it... remove and hide the CD. Call the help desk. Play dumb.

Good for a good couple of hours of entertainment. :-)

You're evil.

I love it!

Thanks, sweetie. (I'm really leaving now. *grin*)

Ah... great idea...

One of the other techs once programmed the laser printers to display weird messages. He put "Feed me!" on them all. Apparently users called to tell them the printers were possessed...

Heck... all you gotta do is print a bunch of pages with nothing but a header saying something offensive about whomever is in charge...

then load the printer back up with paper with one of those pages about every fifth page or so.

It's staggering how long it will take for people to figure out what's happening. could take days. several meetings will erupt about it.

Someday I hope to pull off the mother of all April fool's jokes. Not sure yet just what it might be. One really great idea was to use Active Directory to push out a new desktop wallpaper that looks like the Mac OS X desktop and a .reg file to hide the windows start button and task bar.

I once kiosk-mode'd Internet Explorer on the bothers' computer. It took them ages to figure out what was wrong.

I'd love to replace the Linux desktops with one that says "Windows R00lz" just to see how long it would take the *nix dudes to hunt me down.

hehehe...

One hallmark of the *nix dudes arrogance is that they tend to ignore the simple 'splanations and dig for complex problems that don't exist.

All you gotta do is get on their machine and hack the host file to make IP addys for Yahoo point to Google, Google to point to Alta Vista... and the sweet justice of pointing slashdot to FR.

Eventually they'll find it. But it will take an astonishingly long time. :-)

Mwahahaha....

I have no patience for *nix dudes and their attitudes. I like Windows and I don't care if they think I'm a loser for that.

Agreed... and I used to *hate* windows. But once I got into the guts of NT, I started to like it more and more.

In high school it was Apples and Apple II's. Then I was a CP/M kid back when 8-bit was cool. But got forced into MS/DOS because that's what the college was buying.

Then I bought a Mac. And then a Mac Powerbook... and then got into Netware.

Then NT 3.51 happened, and it was actually pretty stable system, and started to kill off Netware. Then NT 4 blew our doors off. Then Win2k (NT 5) and now Win2k3 (NT 6).

2k3 server is a really solid product. Last summer, I rolled out the upgrade of our NT 4 domain to a 2k3 server Active Directory domain... over a period of about a month... and nobody in the company even noticed that it happened. Now we're running a 2k3 AD domain in native mode and nobody ever saw a single bit of it.

Of course I'm going to take credit for this in my self-eval for 2004, but the credit really belongs to the dudes up the street in Redmond for finally getting it right.

Good morning...

Good speech last night IMO...though the perfectionist in me wishes he would have called for abolition of the IRS and for AC-130 patrols of the border...

Oh, and could we opt out of SS entirely after signing a waiver on receiving Gov't money for any reason having to do with our own poor planning (and get back what we've already paid, to invest as we choose)?

Oh well...

Goooooood morning happy campers!

I'm stuck in orc meetings all day today. :( But at least it's a Friday for me - hurray.

Am sleepy - stayed up for the SOTU speech.

Good morning!

House ad goes up today - on the website and such. We'll see what we shall see after that...

Thursday! Tonight is the Irish session! And tomorrow night is the acoustic jam, and Saturday we have a benefit gig. Busy week, musically speaking.

I'm thinking it may be time to start trying to find homes for the two kitties who won't be making the journey...though it'll be really tough in Halvah's case. Mom bought her for me, you know...out of the blue. Showed up at my work one day all shame faced and said she'd done something a little crazy...and there Halvah was!

The older kitty is a wonderful cat too, but it's an easy decision in her case. She would NOT make that trip well.

Can't start to early on that, if they really can't go.

Are they both Siamese? It's possible, if they get along well, that a home may want both of them. Once someone has decided to take a kitty.... two aren't any more trouble ;~D
