LAS VEGAS - Greg Raymer, the 2004 World Series (news - web sites) of Poker champion, apparently knows how to wield more than a stack of chips when everything is riding on it.
The soft-spoken patent attorney from Stonington, Conn., fought off a pair of attackers Dec. 20 at the Bellagio hotel-casino after he had finished playing a cash game of poker, according to a Las Vegas police report.
Raymer was returning to his room about 2 a.m. when two men approached, the report said. As he opened the door to the room, they tried to push him in.
But the heavyset Raymer resisted and began struggling with the men, the report said. As he was fighting, one of the men pulled out a gun and said: "We just want the money."
But Raymer didn't give up, and yelled for security, causing the men to flee.
A security officer said one of the suspects was a poker player and also recognized him from a previous incident.
Police made an arrest in the case but the report didn't identify the person.
Raymer, known as the "Fossilman" in poker circles, won the WSOP Texas Hold'Em title and $5 million in cash. He beat out a field of 2,576 in May to win the prestigious event.
On a poker message board, Raymer recently wrote: "I don't write this to brag, I just want any robbery-minded people out there who hear about this to know that I'm a tough mark, and they won't get that much off me even if they succeed."
Welcome to Free Republic.
Yah I want to live. Sue me.
Mike "the mouth" Matusow was that creep's name. I have run into hom on occasion.
Thank you.
See post #20, Second line. Read slowly.
I already read the only line in your post besides my quote, and I responded to it.
Quit picking on the nooooobie ya big brute.;-)
Ok Ok Ok...:-(
Yep that is Raymer.
I predict lots of those sunglasses will be worn at this year's WSOP. I plan to wear them.
I thought it a little curious that they were able to get past security. I've never played there, but i have played in most of the casinos in Vegas, usually the security was excellent. I heard about this last wed, at the Horseshoe, all the players were talking about it. I was playing in my first no-limit tournament. Finished 6th out of a field of 72, now I'm hooked for life. Only made 410 dollars but it was a great time. Plus i figured 3 hours at the poker table saved me about 2000 at the Blackjack tables.
Blackjack is typically very -EV(expected value).
Poker can be very profitable because you are playing against other people and not the house.
No I play online about 20 hours a week and at the casino 20 hours a week.
When I play live, I normally play at Turning Stone in Verona, NY.
I have visited Las Vegas a couple times, and played at the Bellgagio in their 80/160 limit hold em.
I don't play any other games besides poker.
I play stud, stud8, omaha(Pot limit), omaha8(limit), and hold em(limit and no limit).
My best game is probably PL omaha with no limit hold em being a close second.
So what are the best online poker sites?
No one will play with me where I live, anymore. ;^)
PokerStars and UltimateBet for the great software, tournaments, and customer service.
PartyPoker for the loosest games around with the worst players. The reason for Party having the worst players is that they do more TV advertising than any other poker site, usually during televised poker events like the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour episodes. This leads to an abundance of "fish" on PartyPoker. "Fish" are very good to play with, because they are very passive and very loose. They will play almost any two cards so if you stick to playing good cards you will take all of their money in the long run.
Although I do worry about the viability of online poker for making a living in the long run. Eventually the fish are going to run out of money. Fortunately, that is not a problem for me because I can continue to play at the casino and move to California/Vegas if necessary.
Thanks for the tips - I'll put on my special sun-glasses and check them out.
;^)
(oops, wrong tv show. my bad)
You do that.
May all your cards be live and all your pots be monster. ;)
Agree
Party Poker and Poker Stars is like night and day, when talking about quality players.
