The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I have her address, but not a phone number. I'm guessing Suzi's got her number.

It's wicked cold up there today. Maybe she didn't have to go to work for some reason.

Gunpowder is like the press. They invented it be we knew what to do with it. We made firearms and for the first time in human history the lightly trained peon or barely trained farmer was able to stand up to the strongest and the bravest and best trained and have a prayer of winning. The degree to which this has rewritten the way the world works is largely under estimated. Before the firearm non military civilians had no hope of successful revolt against a professional arm. Most other weapons require full time exercise and training to acquire and retain enough proficiency to prevail on the the field of combat.

Sitting here holding a phone to my ear... ah telecons, so much fun :P

Oh well, it is better than being out of the loop.
Other than that I am trying to resist buying a mac mini. I will get one some time just trying to make 'some time' into 'when the card is paid off'. In other news the sky is still blue, so they tell me.

I have her number so I just called.... She's home sick with a stomach bug today, and her computer is all taken apart so she can't post. But she's "OK" if not completely "OKAY".

Bah.

Macs are boring. Much more fun to build your own. I'm hoping to get my motherboard installed in the case tonight...

Ah, thanks for letting us know! I was hoping it was something minor like that.

HEY ALL! I have a mystery. It's Twilight Zone Day here at our place. I posted this on the saddle club thread for a horse behavior perspective, but I want to post it here too for an electrical perspective.

FIRST, A circuit went dead in the barn. It's the one the fence was plugged into. I thought maybe with all the rain, the fence had shorted out, but the breaker at the panel wasn't tripped off. But for no apparent reason, all the wires and outlets on one side of the barn are dead.

We plugged the fence charger into another outlet with an extension cord and it works fine.... not fried or anything.

SECONDLY, the horses are acting really weird in the lean to. Cyn BOLTED out of her stall this morning and was afraid to go out the end opening she usually uses... (there are three openings, each end, and a middle. She turned around a couple times like she was trapped before bolting out the center. All three horses are acting snorty and weird about that opening, I can grab mane (we didn't put halters on them or anything) and lead the pony and Bay through them, but they hesitate and then bolt through and run off. Cyn didn't want to even get that close, I grabbed her mane and tried to lead her through, but she pulled away and bolted out the middle opening. Every time they run out and then come back, the same thing would happen again.

Here you can see Cyn's stall opening at the far end, the trouble-spot-end and middle lean-to openings.

The power supply to the fence comes out right there, but it doesn't look damaged, and though we are contemplating these two events (the dead electrical and the odd behavior) being related, there's no logical explanation for them being related! WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND HERE THIS MORNING?

Why would a circuit suddenly stop working?

Hmmm... I don't know about the electricity, but any chance there's a strange person or animal wandering around at the barn to spook the animals? (Any chance the wire was cut somewhere?)

Or, could you human people have been spooked by the electrical thing, and then the horses picked up on it?

Any of those things are possible, but when I first let Cyn out and she bolted out of the stall, we were not yet spooked about the cicuit because I didn't know about it yet.

I wondered if a predator had made an appearance in the woods out there in the night... Coyotes are common out there, but they usually wouldn't spook the horses, the horses treat them as nonchalantly as they do a dog. But a deer or something else.... they get spooky about. Don't think a bear went through, no fence damage ;~D

I have have built my own a few times. What can I say, it is a cheap way to get a decent game playing machine if you don't mind spyware and random crashes. The rest of the time I like things to work. I plan to mount a mac mini in my car and hook it up to and LCD and a GPS. Is that enough of a project machine for yah? I am going to use an other one as a very tiny unix file server. I will probably do that before I put one in the car. Now that we have the VPN up and running I could use a better file server machine.

Break out a multi meter and start poking around. I am betting the wires are shorted some place. I would open that breaker and see if the horses settle down.... who knows...

We did use a circuit tester... there are two cicuits in the barn, one still works (the one that controls the main overheat lights, thankfully) but the other circuit that controls the other side (where the stalls are, coincidentally (?!)) is dead. The whole circuit. The feed from the house to the barn is underground.

And the breakers for both are in the barn?

The minimacs are cute. But I don't buy cute. I like a nice big, solid tower that hums and whirrs. It's like a security blanket.

The car computer sounds great. Are you going to set speakable items so you can compute while you drive? (Not that I recommend computing while you drive....)

In other news the graphics card on one of my work Macs is getting upgraded. (Just don't know what they're going to upgrade me to.)

In other other news, I got out of briefing at a big meeting only to be invited to another big meeting the day prior. TDY has just been extended. *pout*

Have you checked the point where the wire meet the power source? (Tho that's probably the first thing you checked....)

I am neither an electrician or a horsemaster (nor have I played one in the Stormhand's Outdoor Holiday Extravaganza), but could something have shorted out with a "bang" that spooked them?
