The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

elf-boy wanted donuts Saturday mornin. He is completely into the compound word thing. This is one he has not noticed yet, though. It is probably because he had only seen it spelled donut instead of doughnut.

I have heard that, so I had one fresh at the store (we've been infected in Western PA).

It was a hot fried ball of sugar. Just too sweet and light for my donut tastes.

I don't really find the hot ones getting too sweet until after about the first dozen...

Steve makes delicious yeast risen fried donuts. When I was expecting Joshua, I craved yeast items (even several Odoul beers)...Steve would make these donuts and as fast as he fried them, i ate them.

I gained 40 pounds, no kidding.

What I really enjoy making are beignets. Yum! I should make a whole batch and give them a new name... something patriotic.

Goodness... and how big was Joshua? Feed that kid too many donuts and he'd have been 15 pounds... ouch...

oh dear. That sounds familiar. When I was expecting elf-boy, I craved the same things. I found myself baking all the time. I usually made cinnamon rasin bread.

I'll be back. Gotta drop off a movie at blockbuster. I know, no more late fees, but it is the principle that matters.

*sniff*

Just called and talked to the people who have the dogs. Apparently they're settling in just fine. I could hear Fiona barking her head off in the background - they were outside playing in the snow and telling off the dog across the way. Making themselves ta home...

Glad they're OK!

Sounds like a normal, well-adjusted doxie!

Glad you talked to them and glad they're doing well.

Me too. I feel better now...though of course I'll miss 'em for a good while.

At least I still have the cats for the time being!

Ouch...

I just bought my textbooks. Used, off Amazon, with shipping - $225 for two of the classes. Hopefully I won't have to shell out for the third class.

And that saves $30 at least from buying them new from Amazon, and probably twice that at the college bookstore.

Textbooks are just incredibly expensive, aren't they? It's been awhile since I took any classes...but in the military I got tuition free but had to pay for books. I think it still averaged a hundred bucks or more for a course. Ugh! And they aren't even fun books...

Half.com is sometimes a good source for used textbooks, too. So I hear, anyway.

I want chocolate. Badly.

That way you know they are in a good home. You can feel good about where they are.

It's a good thing.

This one isn't the one I used, but it's vey close. I found it online. I use honey instead of sugar. You could substitute splenda too.

2 lb. LOAF:
1 1/2 cups water
2 Tablespoons margarine
4 cups white bread flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast -- (or bread machine)
MIX-INS: 3/4 cup raisins

Remove bread pan; attach kneading blade. Place all ingredients in bread pan in order listed. Insert bread pan, close lid and plug in. Select bread type: Sweet Bread cycle. (For Oster number 8). Press start. Bread will be done baking in the number of hours indicated. Add Mix-in when bread maker beeps, about 32 minutes after starting.
