The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Mmm...Nerf herders...

He was the first crush I ever had - as Han Solo, when I was...oh...maybe six? ;-)

I thought Luke was an annoying pipsqueak.

Yeah, a pretty good visit. I have been kind of kicking back this week and trying to get going on stuff at work so I was trying to avoid freeping much. My folks new place in Texas is very nice. This was the first time I saw it all moved into. Having built it to their tastes means all the furniture they have picked up over the years no longer looks out of place but it all 'fits' in the new place perfectly. The response by us kids when we saw where they had put various things was 'Oh! so that's where that goes.' It was like seeing familiar puzzle pieces finally in the place they were suppose to go. Empress was back from Ireland and finally done with school. My brother and his brood drove in from AZ and my older sister and husband came up from Kingsvile so we had another 'everyone there' Christmas. I got the usual hints from mom that I should move to Texas but not so many of the hints to find a nice girl. I hope everyone else had a good Christmas. You will all have to forgive me for not catching up on the usual flood of posts :D We got a foot of snow in the last two days. Some work friends and I went out sledding last night. I still have a bruise from one time I rolled the Flexible Flier. I need to buy a new one of those. The one I have is over 25 years old and shows it. Nothing beats a metal runner sled in the classic design. Well waxed they can fly. I swiped the most beat up one from mom & dad when I moved to Iowa. The other two are not getting much use in Texas.

Do you have a copy of the book "The Well Trained Mind"? I had mentioned it to mrsnad earlier in the week. The authors have great book lists for each era in history, for each stage of school development. Erin would be in the Grammar Stage which is 4-8th grade. It is a neat program, though I never used it properly with my kids. I just borrowed the book lists and some of the ideas. Worked for us! If your library has a copy of it, check it out and peruse the book lists!

From that picture with Steve and the chicken, you can tell that he's lost a lot of weight!

I KNOW it!! He looks so much better!

He gained about 7 pounds during the holidays and lost them in just a few days after going back on induction. He still looks good!

Happy New Year! Sounds like you had a very nice Christmas with your family!
So, is Empress finished with school and looking for employment, or will she be continuing with school? I wasn't sure if she was in Ireland just for a 'semester abroad' thing or not. In what town had she gone to school there? One of my nephews did a Semester abroad in Cork a few years ago. He really liked Ireland.

You know, you don't have to just read things to her from the era she's studying. Let her pick out some books to read, too. Our kids enjoyed the Redwall books, even up to age 12 or so. They're fun stories all about animals with human attributes. Erin might really enjoy them! I used to read them aloud to the kids and do the different accents that I thought the animals had. For example, from the dialogue, it sounded as though the moles were cockney, and the Hares had a veddy British military, clipped way of speaking, "What what"?!

If she's interested in being a 'Vetnary', she might enjoy the "All Creatures Great and Small" series of books by James Herriot.
