The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

That extra carriage return really ticks you off somehow?

Really?

No, it doesn't tick me off... I just put paragraph tags in my posts by reflex. My fingers are programmed to type them in automatically.

nuthin' like offal scattered all around tuh liven up a story line...

Speaking of livening up a story, the material on "horse lords" in the EE's added features mentions how the pricipal actors had to start out several months earlier to learn to ride. Even though they had rider doubles for the risky stuff, they still had to be pretty good horsemen themselves.

It was Bernard Hill who convinced PJ that it would be a good scene for Theoden to ride down the front rank of his men, slapping their spears with his sword. The 150 riders (the ones who stuck it out after weeks on location in the middle of nowhere) responded to the "death...death...DEATH!" cry with a genuine full-bore cavalry charge. Theoden's speech, and the charge, genuinely scared the sh!t out of the rest of the film crew, they said.

I will be forever in my debt to Bernanrd Hill, those nameless riders, and the smarts of Peter Jackson to know a good thing when he sees it, for giving us that moving scene.

I really liked that story as well. Yes, it seems that the sword-clinking ride of Theoden along the line of horsemen was Bernard's idea. One of the finer moments in the movie, IMHO.

The "Death!" charge did indeed seem to affect the crew, and the extras as well... that it added an emotional sense of realism for all of them...

It just makes you wonder about the great battles recorded in our own history, and what the words of those commanders were. It must have been something like that.

Gooood morning happy campers!

Our house is finally ours again. All of the relatives have gone home. We had wonderful holidays but now need a vacation to recover. *whew*

LOL!

I'd with you - I owe a debt of gratitude to Bernard Hill. That is one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie - all three movies, for that matter. Doesn't matter HOW many times I see it, it has me out of my seat with tears in my eyes. My GOSH it's wonderful!

Heheheh...

Thinking of doing something truly, truly evil to my main character. Almost of Agatha Christie evil proportions. Haven't completely made up my mind yet. But it makes me happy just thinking about it...

Heheheh...

When we put it all together, it seems the actors who came out months ahead of time, to learn horseback riding, were also taking archery, swordfighting.... It was sortof middle-earth boot camp :~D

Good morning everyone... Vet coming out this morning to check up on all the horses and do what needs to be done... Weird dog lady not expected till later.

Sigh...

Well, Homer stays in the house today, and if she does show, he's already gone... along with the appropriate condolences that I hope she finds her dog. He ain't it.
