The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Heh...We've got snow, freezing rain, and sleet this morning.

Stupid weather!

I'm thinking about getting one of these. Ought to be good for flinging fur mice down the hall for the cat to chase.

Morning - well, how about treebucket instead. 'bois-de-arc' became bodarc once it was repeated a couple times.

Morning - That is a really cool site; the tennis ball one could work with Gypsygirl's squeeky troll and ball. hmmmmm.

Sunny, upper twenties. Supposed to be 50 degrees plus all next week. Weatherweenie said 'positively spring like' which means we'll likely get fonked on big time in late January.

I wish it'd quit weathering on days I'm supposed to travel. :)

Apparently these things grow in VA too, now that I see the picture, I think there are some right around here...if I am up with my truck sometime, I'll try and get a couple branches maybe.

Beautiful bows you made the kids, Osage.

The focal point of the grounds at Red Hill is the largest and oldest Osage Orange Tree in America. It has a span of ninety feet and stands fifty-four feet high.

Estimated to be 350 to 400 years old, the tree is listed in the American Forestry Hall of Fame, is a Virginia State Champion, and is a National Champion.

Named after the Osage Indians who used the wood for bows, the Osage Orange produces large, green inedible fruit, commonly called "mock oranges" or hedge apples."

I believe the tree in the picture is in the general neighborhood where I am currently located, with plenty of others very close.

Morning Sam - I thought you might be able to find some around there. If you can find some saplings, couple inches in diameter, you can build some cool bendy handle bows. Branches can work as well, 'limb-bows' we call 'em.

Tiller is circular in style. Every inch of the bow works you can use a 2:1 ratio for bow length to draw length. 50" bow length, can get you a 25" draw length.

You sure know alot about this subject, Osage!

"Red Hill" seems to have been Patrick Henry's home in VA, about 55 miles from where I sit; apparently Lewis and Clark brought back Osage Orange trees or fruit to VA. Merriweather Lewis, like Thos Jefferson, lived in the People's Republic of Charlottesville, so no wonder the trees are around here.

I'm going to make one more flat bow, for myself, or maybe 2, a 40 and a 50, then perhaps I might try a recurve. Osage, did the recurves exist very far back in history, and were they favored for horseback?

Good morning everyone and happy day after Christmas! I trust everyone is still mostly off work today at least, I am officially off till the new year, but none of my clients know that... I may get a call here and there.

So has everyone seen RoTK EE now? Watching it today perhaps? Anyone still not have it? I hear Rosie got one from her family.... I know my brother just got his....

When recurves started, that is up to debate, but they have been around for quite a while. Sythians, Mongols, Turks, all the historical horse-people included excellent archers. Horsebows.com is an interesting site. There is a horse archery gathering in Iowa each year. Haven't made it yet but plan to.

Morning Hair, have seen ROTK twice now, once the movie, once the directors commentary and disc one of actors commentary. Quite interesting, the various stories.

Our office is not only open but all have been 'encouraged' to be there. Inducements include a 'free' catered lunch each day. "making a list-checking it twice.." seems to come to mind.

Good morning... don't have the ROTKEE here yet... probably won't for the foreseeable future. Not enough money, and too many other expenses at the moment.

Don't hold back discussion of it on my account, though. My eyes can skip over any spoilers.

I understand that Bear. And really... There isn't a lot that is earth-shattering spoiler material in this one. One is only a surprise because we were told it wasn't true for so long! Like the others, they are just good little additions.

The special features are good though, I hope you get it soon.
