FREEPER FAMILY TABLE--Thanksgiving recap
me | The Day After...oy vey! | grellis

Posted on 11/26/2004 6:47:07 AM PST by grellis

I am going to keep it really simple today--I don't know about you folks but I am still digesting and I have relatives returning any moment. Here are a few queries...

How was your Thanksgiving?

Are all of your relatives liberal democrats?

What is your all time favorite Thanksgiving dish?

What is the worst Thanksgiving dish you have ever eaten?

Did anyone else get snow this week? 8^)

Why are you answering these silly questions when you should be out shopping?

What is the airspeed velocity of an African Swallow? European?

Can anyone lend me some Tums?

"recycled" meal!!!.........that's a great description.

Hubby cleaned the carcass of the bird last night - it's in the freezer, the meat from it filled the roaster pan. Other than lunch and snacks I won't do a recycled meal until Sunday - and then the balance will get seperated for later meals and put in the freezer.

We don't have enough left to freeze. I thought we were going to be stuck, a few minutes ago, because the microwave wouldn't work! Fortunately it came back on when I reset the breaker in the garage.

We stayed home. We're in California, and the rest of our family is spread between Texas, Colorado, and Southern California. It's too far to travel for Thanksgiving.

On Wednesday, we had my church Bible study group over for a potluck. Only 3 people didn't go. Everyone else showed up. It was a lot of fun. I made a taco soup, and everyone else brought side dishes and desserts.

Yesterday, I cooked the whole Thanksgiving dinner for my hubby and kids. The only thing, my son had diarrhea all day yesterday, and now my daughter has it today. I think it's viral, and my daughter is really not feeling good today. Lots of stomach cramps.

After dinner, we watched Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. It's the first time my 8 year old twin girls have seen an Indiana Jones movie. One of my girls sat on the edge of her seat the whole time and was clapping her hands and screaming during the whole movie. She was really fun to watch. The other 2 kids liked it, but they weren't as vocal.

Today, we were going to see "National Treasure", but my daughter's not up for that. Instead, I'm going to make some turkey soup for my sick kids.

I don't understand how anyone in my house is eating ....... Jax wanted eggs and toast for breakfast, and after she finished it for asked for another. Then she ate an apple - now she is napping and hubby is in the other room eating a ham and cheese sandwich.

Except when you open the fridge, all obvious signs of all the cooking done yesterday is gone....I got the last of the dishes and appliance put back in their allotted space - now maybe I'll take a nap!

Sad to say, our Thanksgiving was not so happy. On Tuesday morning, I went downstairs to do some laundry and found one of our beloved dogs had passed away. She laid down for her nap and just died in her sleep. It was so shocking and sudden, and we're really grieving. She was not sick at all, in fact she'd been running around like a puppy just hours before... that morning she had her breakfast, went outside, ran around like a crazy nut the way she liked to do sometimes in the morning, then my husband put her back in the house with his usual good-bye pat, he went to work, I went inside to do house stuff. Two hours later, I found her. No noise, no struggle, no barking from her or her sister, nothing. It looks like she just laid down, relaxed into her nap, and slept away. I know she didn't suffer, and I take comfort in that. But we're still just stricken... she was a wonderful dog. We still have her sister, who is bearing up remarkably well. And, as my husband pointed out, she left us a great gift... she adored our two year old, and thanks to her, he not only isn't afraid of dogs, but loves them all. That makes me feel better. She was eight years old and completely healthy (at her last check up, ironically, the vet commented on how good her heart sounded). I knew the breed was susceptible to heart problems, but didn't realize some of them could take her so suddenly without any warning. It was just too soon, but we are lucky we had her as long as we did. I have to stop now... I am still tearing up over her every time I talk about it. So unfortunately, this probably ranks as saddest Thanksgiving ever for us.

Oh Grace, I am so very sorry.

Many people do not understand the grief we feel at the loss of a beloved pet.

None of the relatives that attended dinner yesterday are liberals. I'd call them moderates that probably voted for Bush if they bothered to vote.
My favorite Thanksgiving dish is the sweet potato souffle that has a praline crust on top. The worst dish ever is probably that green bean casserole with the can of onion rings on top.

Used the smoker for the bird and it was the best turkey we ever had (Ms. P made a conventional stuffed bird in the oven also).

Politics was mostly Frepper-type since my best friend, kids and son-in-law are all of that persuasion. Niece and nephew are libs but they didn't bring up politics.

We have a tradition in our family to go around the table and say what we're thankful for. Our country, President Bush's reelection and our troops were the big winners this year. The libs winced a bit during that phase.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. We have a four year old beagle that was just diagnosed as having epilepsy. The vet said that beagles are prone to get that around the age of 3 and 4. She hasn't had a seizure yet, just swats and bites at bugs that aren't there.

What breed was your dog?

I've got a question for everyone - but probably mostly the menfolk around here.........

How does one get rid of moles?

The only kind of stuff hubby found (granted it was just the first place he lokked) was the nasty kind of stuff with warnings like "don't have children after using this product" on it.

We can't fill in the holes fast enough, and I'm afraid my daughter, one of her friends, or one of us is going to get hurt stepping into an unseen one.

Any help would be appreciated!!!!

I'm so sorry Grace - pets really are part of the fmaily. We had to put our Lab down a couple of years ago and I still bawl thinking about it.

I'm so sorry to read of your loss--I had to go snag a box of tissues before I could post. Was she a large breed? How are your kids coping?

My own large breed girl is now 13 and acts the way you mentioned--she is having a second puppyhood. My husband says that its a great sign of a healthy older dog, but I don't know...to me, it just feels ominous.

I wish I had some comforting words for you but it seems trite (which doesn't mean its not true)--you had 8 wonderful years with her and she had 8 loving years with you. Your family is in my prayers. I'm so sorry!

Well, I got to sleep in today. Hooray!! Now that's what I consider something to really be thankful for!

As I've mentioned before, I am no cook. And I really mean that! My husband does most of the cooking here at our home, but on holidays we go to my parents' house.

This is the last year I will get to travel 2 miles to my Mom and Dad's house for Mom's cooking. My mom retired about a month ago, and my Dad retires next spring. They are selling out, leaving Kentucky, and moving to Oklahoma. I suppose it was sobering to realize that their plan of leaving is truly coming to pass.

One of my 8 year old twins said grace before our Thanksgiving meal, and she had asked God to protect our soldiers. It had me in tears. I'm glad this generation coming up realizes that we need to take care of and honor our nation, and those who protect it.

Grace, I am so very sorry to hear about your dog, what a sad, sad way to spend a day of thanks. Hopefully you can find peace in knowing your pup went in a gentle way.

Happy shopping season to you all. I have done most of my shopping via the internet. I cannot handle the crowds, love the free shipping, and if it can be tax-free its even better!!

From what I've heard, you will need pros to do it. At least get an extimate/consultation from a local pest control outfit.

Oh, you all who have *at least a few* conservative family members, are SO lucky. We are surrounded by libs, they drive me batty. There might be some moderates in the mix, but they are quiet. Why are libs so loud?

My favorite food is the turkey, I think, but I love most food in general so it's a hard choice! I like to make potato soup with turkey out of the leftovers. Mmmm.

The worst thing I ever had was probably the cranberry dish I made yesterday-yick! It was a new thing I tried, a cranberry relish, turned out too spicy.

Grace, I am so sorry about your loss. :( It is good she apparently did not suffer. My 12 year old Sheltie, Stevie (aka "little buddy"), is not aging gracefully...and it's so hard. He's been a faithful friend. My best wishes to you and your family for healing at this difficult time.

Everyone is very kind to post and mail such nice thoughts. My girl was a boxer. She was just as healthy as she could be, which makes it so much more shocking and hard to understand, but from some research I now understand that not all heart ailments give signs ahead of time. I have two sons, one is just three months old, but the two year old played with the dogs daily. He doesn't seem to understand her being gone, though he has looked for her. I am glad that he is too young to have the full impact of this sadness. I have a lot of photos of him with both dogs and I can tell him stories when he's older about how much this dog loved him. In fact, when he was learning to walk, she was so anxious, she would hover over him to check on him to the point I had to tug her away and explain that kids have to fall when they are learning! I would tell her that he'd never learn to walk if she didn't back up and let him move a little.... She would topple my son over more often than not with her anxiety over his walking! She loved to lick his face and was never anything other than loving and patient and vigilant with him. When they played outside, she had to always have him in her line of vision and always kept a watchful eye on him. I miss her so much and it seems so empty here! I know it will take a while to get past this, but it is comforting to hear from so many other pet lovers out there. Thank you all again....
