FREEPER FAMILY TABLE--Dear Abby
me | November 19, 2004 | grellis

Posted on 11/19/2004 6:32:14 AM PST by grellis

Since we have several new moms and dads at the table (remember--you are a new parent to each of your children!), I thought it might be nice if we helped them sift through the barrage of advice they are now facing. What is the best advice, with regard to becoming a parent, that you have ever heard? The worst? Most ridiculous? Most dangerous?

It is a very famous quote from a very funny man, and is admittedly a bit risque for this thread. My apologies for the intrusion, and I hereby ask that the post be removed.

In case you were interested...

Freeper Family Table is a Fridays-only thread, just for parents. Each week we discuss a different topic relating to conservative family life. If you want to be added to the ping list, let me know (and PLEASE indicate if you are a mom or dad!). Its a very low volume ping list but a worthwhile thread!

Buy stock in Kodak.

You will be taking so many pictures and giving them so much money that you might as well make some money off of the supply side of the equation.

If it weren't for swingy chairs, I probably would not have taken more than a shower a week when my kids were infants.

Swingy chairs...God's gift to maternal hygiene!

Most people can't, but the reality is greatly superior to anything we could imagine.

"Spare the rod, spoil the child."

Exactly! Believe me, with 4 boys in the house, and all of them red-blooded boys at that, the rod doesn't get spared around here! :) I've been threatening for years to make myself a holster to wear so I can have easy access to my paddle at all times - "Look out, boys, Mama's packin'!" :)

Seriously, the Bible is the ultimate child training tool. If you live by the Word, pray over your children constantly and love them, I don't think you can screw up. They might rebel some at a few points in their lives, but I believe they'll come out right in the end. In fact, the Bible promises it - "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6).

Electric vibrating bouncer! Better than swings, for us, because our babies get so fat so fast that they burned out the swing motor!

Don't try to become your kids friend. Remember you are the parent and have a responsibility to that child.

Only you can decide how many is enough. We left it dependant on prayer and my health. We had 6- one in heaven and 5 on earth. I would not give up one of them.

It just occurred to me that I posted today's thread in News, which explains why so many more people are seeing it! I usually post in General. Whoops!

God does not give you children for you to teach them but for them to teach you.

Being a just and merciful God, when your children want to learn all the lessons that they have been teaching you, they have to get their own children.

If you mess up, ask forgiveness. It teaches them a great lesson.

So true in any situation!
