Word For The Day, Friday, November 12, 2004
Friday, November 12, 2004 | Slip 18

Posted on 11/12/2004 4:21:54 AM PST by Slip18

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

New WFTD:

Nuisance– noun

This word is pronounced “new sense.”

Etymology: French again. Sheesh!

1) Harm, injury.
2) law An offense, annoying obnoxious or obnoxious thing that or practice: a cause or source of annoyance that although a single act is usually a continuing or repeated invasion or disturbance of another’s right.
3) A person that annoys by usually by obtrusion: pest.
4) A) A vexing, difficult or distressing practice or a state of things. B) Something that is disagreeable or troublesome: annoyance.

Adjective

1) Possession of the ability to annoy, distress or hamper.
2) Constituting a nuisance – used especially of wild animals.

Why is it I can never get the blue font on the second word? It is driving me CRAZY!

My best vacation memories were going with all 12 cousins (ages from 9-18!) with a bunch of uncles camping out west. 10 days total perhaps.

Camped first at the top of the Grand Canyon after getting to north AZ. Hiked down Bright Angel Trail the next morning, camped overnight next to the river at the bottom of the Canyon, then hiked back up to the top on the other trail.

beautiful. Absolutely beautiful trip!

There were a lot of other things we saw: Meteor Crater, Mesa Verde and ruins, Canyonland National Park, painted desert, White Sands, mine trips and tours, Four Corners marker (good for ten minutes of looking!), Petrified National Forest, Rocky Mountain National Park...

But the Grand Canyon was the best.

I don't believe you for a second. But if you had said that to me while being sewn up in a very sensitive area, you would have had the scissors in your arm.

Hmmmn.

I doubt that.

If you'd have been able to grab scissors while being sewed up in that type of sensitive area, he'd of ended up with the scissors cutting off a much more sensitive area.

in pointed fact, it's entirely likely that the particular problem would have never crept up again.

Hardly ever, ever again, in fact.

A criminal waste in your neck of the woods. The least they could have done was send in some college students.

But the Grand Canyon was the best

When my Dad came back stateside from Taiwan, my Mom flew to McDill with my baby sister and my Dad bravely undertook to show my brothers and sisters and me (the six of us, ranging in age from 7-14) the US. We landed in Oregon and he bought a station wagon. It was 1968.

We traveled down the Pacific Coast Highway. We stopped at places along the way and picked our own corn and fruit, and ate ourselves sick, literally. It only took one day of driving in a car with six spewing kids to reinforce to Dad the importance of washing produce before eating it. We discovered Kentucky Fried Chicken.

We learned our family history. We visited relatives along the way, including a great aunt in San Francisco and my great uncle in Burbank, a movie star, and my Dad's brother Pick, who worked for JPL on a contract for NASA. We saw television in color and in english- great shows like Rat Patrol, Mission Impossible and Star Trek.

We saw giant redwoods and went to Disneyland and yes, Tiajuana, and then started west to Florida, stopping at the Grand Canyon and sleeping under the stars in the desert.

We had left a land of starving people, open sewers and bomb shelters. We knew we were in paradise. At the height of the Viet Nam war, we were the proudest, most patriotic family you've ever seen. I'd like to give the same experience to my kids, but without them enduring life in a third world country, they just don't get it.

Tell your hubby it could be worse...he could have one of these professions AND be sent to Puerto Rico on business...

TOUGH VOCATIONS 1. Anal-wart researcher 2. Worm parasitologist 3. Lab-animal veterinarian 4. Tampon squeezer (STD researcher) 5. Landfill monitor 6. K-25 (Oak Ridge lab) demolition 7. St. John's Harbor (sewage) ecologist 8. Iraqi archaeologist 9. Tick dragger 10. Nurse

It's been a long time since i have stayed home, taken drugs and worn my pajamas all day. I am learning such interesting things...for instance, my adult children are addicted to a soap opera they call "Days of our Force Fields." I saw about ten minutes of it and came back to FreeRepublic.

The Pacific Coast highway make ALL backseat riders sick: Too many hours and hours of constant and irregular swaying around curves and turns.

The front seat people can "see" the curves ahead - so their mind and internal ear balance anticipates the forces. Also, they can "see" more and so don't get a dizzy.

The ones in the back seat can't see up, have limited side views, and keep getting forced into left and right turns.

(Speaking from one who has clean food "urped" up all the back seat (and passenger laps!) from babies and teenagers in the back seat!

Not a pleasant topic, I'm afraid.

But a very, very beautiful road as well.

Not too many exists: So even if you feel ill, you can't "exit" the road and go some place else. Until you've driven more hours around more curves for more and more hours!

Boring story: in 1977 I had a bleeding ulcer, lost 55% of my red blood cells. They fixed me at the Montreal General Hospital with blood transfusions and cimetidine (AKA Tagamet). which had been on the market about 6 weeks when this happened. Anyway, I had instructions to come back so they could shove a camera down my throat and check it out if I got further pains. Over the next few years I went back a couple of times, but there was no recurrence. However, the first time I returned to the hospital, the doc came in to the waiting room and asked who was there to see him. Four or five hands went up, and he pointed to each of us, saying "I'll take you, then you, etc." I was to be last. When he came a got me out of the waiting room some time later, he stopped with me in the hallway and asked what he could do for me. This was some time after the ulcer, and he'd forgotten who I was. I explained about the ulcer, and he started to laugh. I asked what was funny, and he said "This is Tuesday (or whatever day of the week it was) morning. That's when I treat homosexuals for anal warts." I laughed and asked if I should return to the waiting room and act embarrassed. Anyway, they checked my stomach and the ulcer was still gone.

So in the land of socialized medicine we regularly pay a bunch of tax dollars to allow the perverts to continue their perversion. Great.

The ambulances are kept in heated stations and are all nice and comfy, while I have to get there to drive it. :(

Our front yard is a slushy mess, but it has stopped snowing here. Our Florida dog is right in the middle of this mess of course, while our northern dog takes her own sweet time getting her feet wet. I have been cold all day.......now I have to find something for my homework.
